If Windows 8 does not recognize your CD/DVDW device, this may help solve your problem.

CD/DVD Drive is Corrupt or Missing (Error Codes 10, 19, 31, 32, 39, 41) ffice:office" /><O:p></O:p>
* Note: The following solution requires editing of the registry:.<O:p></O:p>

  1. To begin the editing process, start the Registry Edit<O:p></O:p>
    ◦For Windows 8, Click on Start, click on Run, and type “regedit”; then click OK.<O:p></O:p>
    ◦Click on the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE” folder<O:p></O:p>
    â—¦Click on the SYSTEM folder<O:p></O:p>
    â—¦Click on the CurrentControlSet folder<O:p></O:p>
    â—¦Click on the Control folder<O:p></O:p>
    â—¦Click on the Class folder<O:p></O:p>
    â—¦Click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder<O:p></O:p>
  2. Look for the following names in the right side of the window pane and delete them: <O:p></O:p>
    â—¦UpperFilters<O:p></O:p>
    â—¦LowerFilters<O:p></O:p>
  3. Be sure to restart your computer after you’ve deleted the above files in the registry.<O:p></O:p>
  4. After words, click on start, then Device Manager to see if the CD/DVD drives are recognized.<O:p></O:p>
  5. In some cases, you may need to reinstall some programs such as CD or DVD burning software, iTunes, or Nero<O:p></O:p>

That same trick has been required so many times with so many Windows versions. Its a shame that that wrinkle still has not been ironed out of the Windows platform.
