after a while, it “disappears” from my system…the drive stops showing up in windows explorer, nero, vlc, etc…it takes a restart to “see” the drive
any ideas?

Replace the IDE cable and check the connections, especially for power.
If the trouvble remains, your PSU might be too weak. Heating is another possible problem.
