Trouble with DVD-R's

vbimport

#1

Hi,
I’m using a new NEC 3500 drive with Windows XP Pro SP2 and Nero 6.6.0.1
I bought some Ridata DVD-R blank disks, Nero info identifies these as Ritek G05, but when I start a burn I get this error;
Illegal disk…
Could not perform start of disk at once
burn process failed

I tried some Sony DVD+R and they worked fine at 8X
is there an issue with the 3500 and DVD-R ?

Thanks for any help

this is the logfile…

Yo-

Welcome to the forums-

I use the Ritek 8x -R G05’s all the time in both of my 3500’s with no problems-

Couple of suggestions-

Looks like you have a lot of programs running while trying to burn (only 167mb of memory out of 512mb) - I would shut down as much as you can - or up your memory to 1024mb-

You are using an old 6.6.0.1 version of Nero - update to 6.6.0.8a-

Mike

#3

Probably a media issue IF you use the SAME IDENTICAL STEPS to burn the DVD+R disc. Use 4X burn speed.

#4

Thanks for the replies,
I have updated to nero 6.6.0.8 and cleaned up some of my running apps to give more available memory,
I can burn Sony DVD+R fine, but not my Ritek G05 DVD-R’s
I still get the “Illegal Disc” error, I cannot figure out this part of the Error Message;

“18:53:55 #29 Text 0 File DVDR.cpp, Line 4877
Drive: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG
Book Type request: DVD-ROM
Book Type setting not supported for the loaded disc type”

What does this mean? and how can I change the book type request?

I used Necflash to upgrade the firmware of the burner and it has worked fine with any DVD+R, but now I am stuck with a 50 cake of these DVD-R’s that just will not work

#5

I can answer part of your question… The Book Type essentially tells devices, especially stand-alone DVD players, what kind of disk it is looking at. If you don’t change the book type, the DVD player will see a DVD-R as a DVD-R, or a DVD+RW as a DVD+RW, or a regular DVD movie as a DVD-ROM. Somtimes, a DVD player won’t recognze a burned disk because it is not a DVD-ROM, the standard of pressed movies. With some disks, you can change the book type to DVD-ROM to increase compatibility with more palyers.

Somewhere on you computer, and I can’t guess where, you have set your drive to change the Book Type of your burned disks to DVD-ROM. This will work just fine with a DVD+R disk – they are designed so that the book type can be changed. With a DVD-R, though, it is impossible to change the book type. From what I understand, your computer shouldn’t even try to change it on a DVD-R, but it looks like yours is trying and failing.

Unfortunately, not knowing what has gone on on your computer, I don’t have any specific advice on how to fix it. Look for a tool that changes the book type, and try to set it to normal.

#6

There is NO BOOKTYPE for DVD-R. Reflash the NEC firmware and try AnyDVD and CloneDVD if you want to test with a DVD movie.

#7

Problem solved!..

thanks to Furballi for the firmware suggestion, this drive is in fact a 3450a, when I first installed it I upgraded it to 3500 by reflashing the firmware, it worked perfectly well until I ran out of +R media and started using DVD-R’s
I used necflash to reinstall the old firmware and it now burns both DVD+R and DVD-R at 8X
