i currently have a hp laptop with a matshita dvd-ram UJ 861 H dvd burner. it has worked fine up till about a week ago and now it seems i can’t burn dvd’s. I’m using TDK DVD-R, which i’ve been using forever with no issues. please help. here is my error log.
If I recall correctlyl Matshita driver been not very reliable for burning dvd movies. How long have you had that drive and laptop? Could be it’s a dirty laser lens or the drive no longer work or the dvd burning laser side is no longer functioning?

#3

Welcome to the forum

Thanks for the log, provides a lot of good info.

Apart from Matshita drives being terribly picky, and generally not the most reliable, TDK media can be made by a few different manufacturers, and as such can be variable in quality - meaning one or two discs from the spindle can burn badly, and the rest fine, or vice-versa.

So on that note, it maybe worth trying a well-regarded brand such as Verbatim to either rule in or out the discs as the culprits.

Also, does it read DVD media OK? If reading it is a problem also, then as mentioned the DVD laser may be toast. But hopefully it’s just down to the discs and/or the drive being picky.

#4

it reads just fine. what’s strange is that i was able to burn one this morning, but the next 2 or 3 i tried failed.

#5

OK, sounds like the hardware itself is actually fine, then

I really would suggest getting a Verbatim disc or two (or even something like Sony), just to try.

If that drive is an IDE (as opposed to SATA) one, have you checked to make sure it’s operatng in UDMA mode? Check the link in my signature, “How to check/enable DMA” - the important bit to check is the Current Transfer Mode…just rules that out as well before buying new discs.

#6

on channel 0 (two of them), the first says “multi word DMA mode 2” and “Ultra DMA Mode 5” on the second. On the two channel 1’s, they are are blank. I’m running windows 7 ultimate

I’ve read that they’re not very good at all. but i’m having trouble finding a replacement for my laptop. it’s a hp pavilion dv2740se and the dvd burner is one that is tapered from back to front. any suggestions?

#8

For Matshita I have a different model in my desktop. It is a good drive except there is no firmware update to make it adjustable to DVD-ROM.So I don’t burn with it only rip.
To your porblem.Try waiting at least 15 minutes between burns & maybe longer.
Also try & see if you turn off your laptop & let it cool then burn a disk as soon as possible after boot.
If doing those let you burn a disc then heat is the problem.
on channel 0 (two of them), the first says “multi word DMA mode 2” and “Ultra DMA Mode 5” on the second. On the two channel 1’s, they are are blank. I’m running windows 7 ultimate
Hmmm. That could be the problem - Multi-word DMA 2.

However. On Win7 I’m not sure if the usual method of deleting the IDE controller from Device Manager (and letting Windows reinstall it automatically on reboot) will help, so maybe a Win7 user can provide some input here.

Regarding a replacement drive. I personally would go the easy route and grab an external USB drive

Cholla’s suggestions may also make a difference, so definitely worth a go before grabbing new discs or even a replacement drive. :iagree:

I’m not sure about Windows 7 either .
Do the 0 channels list the DVD drive ?
Whichever one does what is the DMA on it ?
I’ve read that they’re not very good at all. but i’m having trouble finding a replacement for my laptop. it’s a hp pavilion dv2740se and the dvd burner is one that is tapered from back to front. any suggestions?
I do know of people going the DIY way and poping out the drive and swapping the faceplate with another matching drive into that slot but since I don’t currently have a laptop to do that on it’s all from what I read but I know if you can find the matching drive besides Matshita drives it might fix the problem in the long term if you plan to keep that laptop for some time to come. That would be a undertaking to do but something worth keeping in mind other then buying a USB dvdburner and going that route. Also try verbatim as others have mentioned and burn at half the rated media speed and see if the problem remains or goes away.

the first lists the device type as ATAPI Cdrom. the second lists it as ATA Disk.
