Trouble backing up Pirates of the Caribbean

Has anybody else had this happen yet? You have one of two steps…the copying and the writing. It copies the dvd into the hd just fine, but when it went to write the first time, it stopped halfway and said it failed. Thinking of was a faulty disc (it’s happened before), I insert another blank and it runs all the way through and says it finished successfully. I try it out in the dvd player and the dvd player displays “CANNOT READ DISC.” So I go back to the computer and start from scratch and make another back-up. Again the dvd player says it cannot read it. So then I did the Burn Again feature and even the third disc was not reading properly in the dvd player. I don’t have an .ISO file to send in, but I did manage to save part of the log…I imagine this might help?

sounds like your media is not being finalized Lite-onit burners are noted for this especially the older ones do this.
1.right click fab icon select properties then select find target

2.open the vso folder and you will see patin-couffin drivers

3.right click and select open now click on the plus sign and it will show your drive insert your disc that doesnt work select your drive and right click and select unfreeze/ finalize media and that should do it.

Thank you for the step by step instructions. I did everything you said and the Patin-couffin program said “Your drive seem to be reactive now.” I try to use PowerDVD and it says “No disc” and my dvd player still won’t read it. The thing is, that it recognizes that there’s media present. Roxio even called it what it is, Pirates of the Caribbean 2. It is an older Lite-On, but I’m wondering if anybody else had a problem backing up their copy to. Just for fun, I tried another one of my movies that I didn’t back-up yet and it backed it up just fine. So I’m thinking it’s Disney pulling a trick out of there sleeve or it’s just my tricky Lite-On.

try out the new beta release then It may well be a new copy protection!! :iagree:

Roxio causes conflict with Fab and other programs.

Mack

Sounds like a copy protection since other OPs are having problems backing this disc. Even the 3.0.4.5 beta is not working with this disc.

I’ve done bkups of Pirates 2 with v.3.0.3.9 Beta and with v.3.0.4.5 Beta, both in clone and main movie modes. The bkups are flawless.

My money is with Mack here…Roxio is crap…no offense meant. It causes lottsa problems and is a bear to get rid of completely. This just came up a few days ago…forget which thread, but here’s a link to help out with it:
What’s The Program To Completely REMOVE Roxio From Your System? .

If you’re able to back-up your copies and you’re using the same version, then it must be yet another Lite-On conflict. My brand new computer is equipped with the latest Lite-On, but I don’t have it right now  so I’m making due with my older computer that has one of the earliest Lite-On burners in it. So that must be the issue.

I don’t follow…why do you think this is a liteon issue?..

A member posted right after me with almost the same issue. Instead of a false finish, where mine is unreadable, this poster said they couldn’t even get past the VOB_4 file and continued to have that same error, while they were using a Lite-On as well…same as me. I imagine the poster and I both have older Lite-Ons. It’s been said before that Lite-Ons are about the most sensitive burners out there. Although one of the better ones, they tend to have compatibility issues from time to time. I tested the new and old Lite-On drives on this theory. On my old computer, I ran into a snag and kept getting a read error. So I took the same discs and placed them in my new computer, which has the newest Lite-On…and it copied fine. So just by chance, I tried it again in my older computer and again with the read error. It was right after I formatted my hard drive and right before I reinstalled Roxio on the older computer, so the slate was clean. I’d expect the newer beta to be better then the previous final release, but not the previous beta compared to the final version. For example, your beta version just after the 3.0.4.0 should be better. But it wouldn’t make sense why 3.0.3.9 beta would be better then the final 3.0.4.0 version. To me, just from past experiences and from what others have said on here, my best guess is that it’s the Lite-On. I won’t be able to verify until I get my new computer back (Gateway issues heh).

try ripping it with rip.NET available from www.clonead.co.uk, free, it uses the free DVD FAB express to rip it and then use Nero Recode to burn it, excellent results.

Hi boomdj,

I think I see what you based this on…post #2 here by bstcopy and another thread by ecko51…and your own experience, of course.
I’ve never heard of “finalization” issues, specifically with Liteons…I’m not saying you and bstcopy are wrong here, but I’ve never heard this.
Liteons are superb readers (among the best, IMO) and pretty darn good writers…at least overall. They make a ton of burners for a # of brands, for eg., sony, so I’m sure they produce their share of not-so-good drives.

I actually own 5 liteon burners and 2 more installed in liteon standalones…so that’s 7. In my own little world, never had a finalization issue with one exception…happened with a Benq as well. It had to do with the phone home feature in VSO and my firewall. This was a while ago…quite a few users reported this.
You may want to try this just to see…disconnect from the internet, disable your firewall(s) and give it another shot.
Another thought is…your problem seems to be on the burn, whereas ecko51’s is on the rip, unless I’m misunderstanding…

Also, just as an FYI I just tried this as an experiment:
The oldest liteon I could find quickly is an SOHW-1633s (fw BSOS) installed in a 5-6 year old hp pavilion.
Using platinum v.3.0.3.9 Beta,

Ripped entire disc (Pirates 2) in clone mode…files are intact and plays great off the hdd (sorry,I’m too cheap to waste another verb DL… ).

Just ripped main movie, compression at about 60%, ripped just fine, burning as I type (well, sort of type…it’s not pretty…lol) to an +RW, slow as molasses, but seems ok.

Amyway, this is getting interesting.
If it’s not the firewall, you may want to update your firmware…the write strategy may be the problem. Also, I would still rid yourself of roxio, but that’s your call.

Good luck and let us know what you come up with…

I dont know if my LiteOn is that old:

Its a DVDRW-SHW-160P6S

And i never had an issue until 3040.

i haven’t had the burning problems with 3040 others have had- but i don’t use fab to burn- put to hd then burn with nero - works for me

No burning isues here with 3.0.4.0 and LiteOn 1635/YS0Z. I have only burned two so far with 3.0.4.5b, both were fine. There was a more substantial change to the VSO burning engine with 3.0.4.5b, at least it took MUCH longer to install the PCouffin.sys file. Perhaps related to new ISO features? I did Pirates to HDD then Shrink to manipulate and compress.

Hi ya’ll, I just tried backing up my copy of Pirates 2 with a Lite-On 1633s with ver.3.0.4.5 Platinum, trial and it read all the way to the very end and as the program was saying task completed, the error box popped up. It asked if I wanted to retry or abort or ignore. Then as I was going to hit the ignore button, the insert media box popped up. Isn’t that weird! So I put in a Verb 8x SL disk and hit ok which cleared that box, then hit the ignore button on the error box which cleared that box. Fab wrote the disk then and it seems good so far. I’ve only watched about half of it so far, but it looks good. I’ve been having issues with my Litey and ordered a LG GSA-H22 yesterday from Newegg for a Xmas present. But, I then tried backing up the movie called Pulse also Superman Returns and the very same thing happened. Exact timing order as with Pirates 2. What do you think the problem is? Burner, protection, or ver.3.0.4.5. I was using 3.0.4.0 when I did Superman Returns. I watched all of that movie and it’s clean, no errors. Thanks for your help. Mike

Being pirates is a dvd9 movie I used clone and a verbatum
DL , which made a perfect backup.

DVDFAB PLAT 3.0.4.0.

I also intend to say this is the his Lite-On drive issue otherwise he won’t be able to go half way then stop the process.

Very weird. I used 3.0.4.0 on Superman Returns and Pulse and didn’t have any error messages pop up at me. I’ll wait for either my new computer to get it’s repairs done and shipped back, or a final version of FAB before I make another run at Pirates.

if you have 2 drives try the other- somes one drive will not read when another will
