Toshiba sd-m1712 dvd read problem

I have searched and read unlimited amounts of information regarding my dvd drive toshiba sd-m1712. I wanted to watch a dvdmovie with my friend on my computer. I havent been using the drive all that much but i was surprised to see that the drive wouldnt read a dvd called meet the parents and rat rate. Both from us/canada region1 i think. But the drive had no problems reading a danish dvd. With the US dvds my drive tries to read them but in the end the led on the drive stays orange and i cannot read the drive from windows. I have been looking for a sollution and i have tried most things. I have updated firmware from 1004 with region set to 2 and 4 tries left, to J004. But the discinfo tool keeps telling me that the drive is locked. Is it really true that the drive cannot even detect a regionprotected dvd that the dvdrive is not set to take? I thought that i would at least tell me that i put in a regionprotected dvd.

But anyhow. What is wrong here? I have tried to flash back to 1004 several times but the result is always a locked drive. What do i do wrong?

Please help me!

Danish DVDs have regioncode 2 for Europe!
US DVDs have regioncode 1 for North-America!

Flashing a drive with an RPC-1 firmware is only half the job!
You also have to defeat the software protection by running a program like Regionkiller!!

And once your drive becomes locked you cannot unlock it, ever.

READ THIS, carefully!

I dont think i follow you. I have been following that guide all from the beginning, but there is no difference at all. The guide does not state anything about software protection. What is this about?

You should read >> this <<

Well im not sure that i got my point through well enough. When i put in a danish region 2 dvd it works like a charm. But when i insert at region1 disk (also looks different on the readside of the dvd, it has a slightly golden color, whereas the danish one is silvercolored?) the dvd drive will not read the disk. Normally, with working dvds, it the drives led flashes a couple of times and stops when the disc has been loaded. But with these region1 discs from canada the drive flashes like with the danish dvd but then i ends up with a orange light staying lidden. And windows says that the disc is not formatted correctly? Is it the disc itself that is unsupported by my drive or is it in fact regionprotection systems that does this?

I have installed regionkiller but i still have got the same problem. The drive will not read the disc at all.

Then your drive has no RPC-1 firmware!!!

Please read the links/threads that were mentioned here.

I have read those the all night. I stayed up until 5 in the morning. I have been flashing back and forth but for some reason nothing happens. The discinfo tool sais that the drive is locked all the time. Also with the J004 firmware which i suppose is the right one? I am getting somewhat frustrated here :a

There are so many confusing things. Fx in the http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=1&manufactor=31 page this text is written.

-Toshiba SD-M1712 (16X/48X) 1004
(Known firmware : 1004)
You can make your drive region free (RPC-1) by using this Patched X004 RPC-1 firmware (patch by Hijacker).
Hijacker with the help of NEO removed the DVD ripping and DVD-R/RW/+R/+RW speed limitation/bug? for the drive. The firmware is available at http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba_nolimit/
RPC-2

So it sais that the patched rpc-1 firmware for toshiba sd-m1712 is the X004. Whilst the http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba_nolimit/ guide sais J004? This IS confusing. Which one is true and could you specify what you mean by

And once your drive becomes locked you cannot unlock it, ever.

But let me do it all over. I will now go back and flash the drive with 1004. I will then open discinfo and take a screenshot. Then i will post it here and get to know if it looks ready for flashing with the patched rpc-1 firmware. And so forth. Otherwise i am giving up :frowning:

This is a screenshot of my Toshiba SD_M1712 with 1004 firmware xq1004.hex.

After i flashed back to the 1004 i have not played any dvds yet. Still it sais that a region is set?

What is the next step?
As i understand it i am supposed to flash it with RCP-1 patched firmware now?
Would it be xqx004 or xqj004? (referring to the question in #8)

If you only want your drive region free, flash X004.
If you also want to remove the speed limits choose J004.

#12

So it is ok for me to flash with xqx004 now? Based on the screenshot shown?

#13

Japp! XQX004 is suitable…

#14

This is a screenshot of the drive flashed with the x004 firmware.

As you can see the drive is still locked. WHY?

Unless a program like DISCInfo or Drive Region Info tells you that your drive is still protected or you used an autoreset firmware, your drive IS region free, and any region counters that you still see come from software region settings.

#16

i AM running DVD Region Killer in the background and the screenshot looks the same…

#17

I bet you that if you disable RK and reboot, DISCInfo will say it’s RPC1.
The drive is 100% sure RPC1. It’s just software who messes it up…

#18

Well that is not the case. I have restarted several times since. And DISCinfo still tells me that the drive is locked.

#19

The drive is RPC1 for 100% :iagree:

#20

Well i know you are convinced about that, but apparently i cant make it work following the guides given in this thread.
