Toshiba proposes a Wi-Fi SDHC card standard.

[newsimage]http://static.rankone.nl/images_posts/2010/06/dsCqyS.jpg[/newsimage]Toshiba is moving into the Wi-Fi-enabled SDHC card business, it wants camera manufacturers to get on board with a standard for all devices.

I think it would be better for camera manufacturers to build the Wi-Fi into the camera itself. This would also allow for a larger and better positioned aerial than concealed within the SD slot, an area not really designed for Wi-Fi reception.

Another advantage of Wi-Fi built-in the camera is that consumers interested in a Wi-Fi enabled camera would then only need to pay for the Wi-Fi feature once when buying the camera instead of having to specifically buy pricey Wi-Fi enabled SDHC cards.

I agree with you.

Also, another advantage would be having just one wireless in the camera compared to having 1 wireless per SDHC.

That definitely makes more sense, and I seem to recall reading or hearing about some cameras that do just that.

As to the SDHC Wi-Fi card standard, it might be a good thing as it has the possibility of increasing competition in the “Wi-Fi memory card market”, therefore leading to lower prices, presumably.

My 4 yr old nikon camera has 802.11b … too slow for any decent transfers … it has a 2GB SD card in it …

But seriously … wifi SD cards? Just when people were getting used to the idea of hackers owning their linux based adsl/cable modems …

Wifi Network storage, in a highly portable camera … What could possibly go wrong?

Wow, You mean I can just buy ONE SD card and all my expensive XLR cameras and HD camcorders that didn’t come with WiFi will be able to upload pictures wireless? COOL! Huge money saver. Guess I won’t have to replace all my gear after all.

They’re here. But they are not perfect.
