I don't understand this movement towards a "minimalist" browser GUI. You'd think that people were still viewing the web on a 14" CRT at 640 x 480 resolution, rather than a 22"+ widescreen LCD monitor at high resolution. My monitor is a 22" widescreen at 1440 x 900 (due to my aging eyes) and I have plenty of real estate onscreen (except for the overabundance of advertising that pops up onscreen). Oh, wait, THAT'S the reason for needing more available space on-screen. ADVERTISING! How stupid of me!
As far as I'm concerned, Netscape Navigator is still the ultimate browser GUI. If you consider that Netscape Navigator 1.0 was first released in 1994, you'll have to admit the basic GUI for browsers has not changed much in the last 17 years, nor does it need to. These guys got it right the first time! Amazing, when you think about it. I still use the Foxscape theme with Firefox 28.0.
