This is driving me nuts, please help. (slow CD burning, different colors on disc)

Hello

I got DVR108 OEM from newegg.com. The drive was sort of slow when copying audio CDs (DMA enabled, 80 pin cable used) from my Asus DVD-E616P2 drive, especially the lead-in seemed to take forever (good media from Fuji Film and TDK were used). On top of it, the burned CDs have a 3 distinct zones on the recording side after burning. First there is a zone that is light in color, then there is a an area that is much darker and then it goes back to light (so it looks like a dark halo on the recording surface).

I used the Nero testing software and when testing recording, there where 2 big drops in the speed, the graph looks like the drive almost stops. My guess is that the first drop is the beginning of the dark halo and the second drop is the end of it (halo starts about 1/3 into the disk and the first drop was about at 26th minute on the disk content).
This happens with various recording software and and on various brands of media. DVD burning does not show this symptoms, only CD burning.

Now, I know that new 1.18 firmware is supposed to fix the haloing (as Pioneer calls it) but after flashing my drive still produces halos on audio CDs, even though the flash utility announces that the flash was successful and the drive is being recognized as 1.18. The update seems to have shorten the lead-in writing time but my audio CDs still look weird after burning.
Is my DVR108 broken?

Thanks a lot for any help.

Hi,

Try reading this http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=120168

It sounds similar to the “zoning” that happens with DVDs especially above 6x…

Regards…

Thank you, Merlin.

My DVDs are OK, even at high speeds. The CDs come out “zoned” even on low speed burns.

And 1.18 FW was supposed to fix it but it did not. So that link is not much help :-(.

Bad, bad Pioneer.

Will try an to burn an audio CD at low speed as well, and I’ll let you know the results…

Can you post a copy of the graph results you had with Nero and also tell me the burn speed please.

Regards

Merlin

Could you give some time to post the info you need? I am crazy busy at work and will not have time to do more testing until Sunday. But thanks a lot for trying to help put.

OK, it turned out to be easier than I thouht.

Here is the screen-shot from Nero.

The burn speed was set to 32.

The drive uses Z-CLV, see your screenshot.

Chef

I know, I know. But that “halo” on the recording side of a CD really bothers me. Pioneer says that FW 1.18 is supposed to fix that, so I flashed with “Success” message at the end but my Audio CDs still come out “haloed”. The CD still plays OK but I just hate it when something is not working the way someone has promised it would.

My question is whether Pioneer goofed up on the FW update or is my drive broken? Do I write Pioneer about faulty FW or contact newegg to replace my drive? Is there anyone else experiencing this?

#9

Ive nevseen that on any firmware form 1.06 to 1.18.

A girl i knew had my old teac 40x16x40 cdrw and it was newish when i sold her and few months later it did same, calibrations errors in nero and disc lookes funny to look at with all different colours, the drive had to be rma’d but she got new 52x24x52 back.

#10

Just thought I’d show you my results. They are practically identical to yours. :iagree:

I had the same results as you, but could not see any visible “zoning” on the CD-R, only of DVD’s do I get visible “zoning”.

My audio CD-Rs seem to play ok, without any skipping, etc.

#11

The drive is practically new, just bought it about two months ago. I do not remember the firmware revision it came with and I cannot recall if it was “haloing” the audio CDs because at that time I was busy authoring and burning DVDs. Then I upgraded 1.14 and started burning CDs and that is when I noticed the halo. And a few weeks ago 1.18 came put that is supposed to fix halo but it still shows.

Oh, well. Pioneer goes back to newegg. Or I just use it for DVDs and get a CD burner just for CDs.

What CD burnings drives would you recommend?

And if I decide to ditch that DVR108, what else should I consider? Sony seems to be getting favourable reviews as well as NEC. Are they any good?

CD Burning Drive - I like an LG a lot - there 523252 is good. Also you could try the BenQ CD Writer. Neither should cost too much

I sometimes get soning marks on DVD’s tho - never seen on a CD.

#13

If you want a separate CD burner, then I don’t think you would go far wrong with a well known make.

I bought an Artec one, but found it a bit fussy with certain cheap media (bulkpaq).

Try a reputable make of CD burner and you should be okay.

Here is one of the better CD writers:

I use an older, but similar model and have had excellent results with burn quality and media compatibility.

You may end up with a rebadged Lite-ON if you buy Sony. Haloing on CD’s would be the least of your worries if that happens. Ironically it’ll probably burn CD’s well and nothing else.

in My Laptop My Pioneer Dvd-rw Dvr-k12ra Is Behaving Strangly. I Had A Virus Thru Lan Connection From Another Laptop. Since Then My Laptop Has A Problem. I Have Fully Erased & Formatted Using Pm 8.0 But I Am Not Happy.
My Dvd-rw Detects & Reads Both Cd & Dvd But Takes Time As If A Virus Is Controlling It. Then If I Burn A Dvd Or Cd Sometimes It Shows Fully Burnt Sucessfully. But When I Chk The Disk It Shows Disk Currupt Or Bad. So I Tried All Disk Types & If I Burn Say 100mb On A Cdrw It Is Working But If I Try To Burn Full Dvd Or Even Cdrw It Doesnt Show Any Thing Even Says Disk Is Empty Even After Sucessfully Burning. Plz Do Help I Have Lot Od Data To B Put On Dvd. I Dont Want To Waste Dvds.

help!help!help!

dear peopz,
i have an acer travelmate 663LMi with a DVD - R/RW CD-R/RW combo.
after i noticed my drive had problems reading data dvd’s, i proceeded with a firmware update using the following ‘DVR-K12 v1.10 RPC-1 + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip’. although the drive was flashed sucessfully i have problems burning using the latest nero (already waisted 5 CD-R’s so far!!!). i desperately want to burn an iso file in nero, but get the following when the burn process is complete ‘burn process failed - could not perform fixation…’. i do use the burn image to disc option in nero, so guess that i am not wrong there. i also used another burnprogram, same problem!!!Sad

any help would be very much appreciated Wink

thanks in advance…looking foward to your advice

as i’ve noticed in other forums, the nero log file might give you a first indication of what’s faulty…unfortunately this is like chinese to me.
