Things you love/hate about blank media

I was wondering what other CDFreaks love or hate about media.
Here’s my list

Love :iagree:

 • [li]rare media with obscure MIDs[/li][li]simple and stylish disc designs like Kodak or Maxell[/li][li]dark dye color like Organica 4x dye (not purple like RitekG05, more like Azo CD-Rs)[/li][li]smooth bonding (round edges)[/li][li]silver full face printable media (I love that 3D effect, especially on dark backgrounds)[/li][li]printing on hub, like on Sony and Memorex media[/li][li]strong smelling media (like some Ritek/cheap Plasmon CD-Rs)

Hate :disagree:

 • [li]unbranded, shiny top media!!! (can’t stand these - finger prints and smudges everywhere + they look very cheap - I would never buy unbranded TYs for example)[/li][li]defective top/bottom discs of cakeboxes (especially at 10pc cakes of DVD+R DL media, seems to happen very often to me)[/li][li]plastic wrapping around cakeboxes like on new Verbatims (I want to see whats in the cakebox after I’ve opened it)[/li][li]weird shaped cakeboxes that don’t stack on others

(I bet I’ve forgotten some things)

So, whats your list :flower:

 • Prodisc’s diamond CD-Rs
 • media with a simple & clear design (Maxell, Verbatim, Grundig)
 • gloss inkjet printable media
 • media with gold reflective layer
 • Lightscribe media
 • good bonding (does not necessarily mean “round edges”)
 • FTI made DVDR and Daxon made CD-R media

Hate:

 • fake media with no serial, stamper or SID numbers
 • 16x TY Panasonic & Verbatim DVD-R media
 • unbranded (shiny top) medi
 • shrink wrapped media
 • B-grade Ritek, MBI & Sony media
 • MBI made Verbatim CD-R media
 • Verbatim Crystal CD-R media design
 • E-net’s products

Love:
Media I can rely on. Like Taiyo Yuden (8x DVDs and CDs), Verbatim (DVDs only) etc.
Full face printable media :iagree:
For CDs, coloured/black substrates. Love the look of those.
Prodisc CDs which can fulfill all 3 above requirements
Never had any coloured/silver printable surfaces but I’ve read a lot about a “3D effect” sounds cool.
My new printable YUDEN000 T02s

Hate: crappy, lame, unreliable media
All CMC MAG products except AZO (see point 1 of this list)

weird shaped cakeboxes that don’t stack on others
I hear ya bro.
Shrink-wrapping only as packaging. Can be a pain to transfer the contents to more secure spindles and cases.

Love:

[ul]
[li] A place to write on (like lines, yeah)
[/li][li] Tightly-packed spindles
[/li][li] Clean-looking disc designs (spartan/minimalist)
[/li][li] Spotless discs (dustless?)
[/li][li] Clean edges (no over-gluing)
[/li][li] Refined font faces
[/li][li] Finding a new/different place to buy GOOD media
[/li][li] Anything that screams “I AM PROFESSIONAL MEDIA”
[/li][li] I just love blank media! Any! (as long as it’s worth it!)
[/li][/ul]

Hate:

[ul]
[li] Nowhere to write on (gimme lines/some empty space dammit)
[/li][li] Jiggling discs in a spindle
[/li][li] Stain- and oil-attracting shiny silver tops
[/li][li] Weird, ineffective packaging
[/li][li] FAKE MEDIA
[/li][li] Over-priced B-grade media!
[/li][li] Over-designed disc designs (redundant I know)
[/li][li] Anything that screams “I AM CRAPPY MEDIA, BUY ME”
[/li][li] Not being able to find TY and other A-grade branded media
[/li][/ul]

Love:
High quality discs at low prices

Hate:
High prices
Running out of discs :stuck_out_tongue:

#6

Things I love:

~Finding a great deal on any media, regardless of quality!
~Finding a new media which offers flawless playback on my DVD recorder…always a nice surprise, and even more so if it’s budget media.
~Discs with a nice surface to write on (minimalist design, maybe with lines, as evo69 said)
~Seeing media packaging that shows the COO

Things I hate:

~Shiny silver surfaces - fingerprint city!
~Media packaging with no COO
~Fake media
~The fact that every time I see Verbatim DLs, the price is high
~Running out of places to store my media

Love
On sale

Hate
Sold Out. Sale Item :a
Not on sale Item :a

I like the design of most of Benq’s media (especially of Design series CD-Rs) and of their packaging.

evo69’s post could have been my own, so I just copypasta’d the major ones from his list. What can I say? I’m lazy.

Got any pics of the recording surface? Is it also black?
Got any pics of the recording surface? Is it also black?
Yes, it is black too. Unfortunately I do not have a chance to take a picture of it now. Emtec Carbon CD-Rs are made either by MPO (now vanishing) or by MBIL.

Love:
-those that don’t lose data after 10 years
-printable area that matches the original artwork

Hate:
-“silver hub-printable” whose printable hub is NOT silver!
-branding, especially on the hub of any printable disk, OR that doesn’t match the MID
-brands who don’t actually manufacture their own disks. If it’s CMC, put “CMC” on the outside package labelling; not “Memorex” or “HP”.

:iagree: Those would be perfect for me, they’ve even actually thought of a way to let people write something on those black discs with your run-off-the-mill markers. Tha Black Carbon discs are really good IMHO. :flower:
