The best way to maintain a Windows PC?

I’m gaining information on the way of people maintain their Windows PC’s. For all those that want to / can help me, please post the following information:

  1. Your Windows version
  2. What your Windows is used for (e.g. office, internet etc)
  3. What problems you run in to (e.g. spyware or virusses)
  4. What you do to prevent problems (programs etc)
  5. How you fix problems

  1. XP SP1
  2. Internet, Games, IRC, movies, etc.
  3. None really, some functionality I want is missing but not too bad.
  4. Don’t install lame programs, don’t use IE or OE, pretty much saves me from everything, whoda thunk it?
  5. Dunno, basic troubleshooting? Not sure how else to answer this.

1: xp+sp1 (+hotfixes)
2: internet, gaming including online, irc,music and watching dvd’s
3: windows forgets settings after a while, no other probs using zone alarm pro and avg anti-virus
4: regular defrag and chkdsk and use mozilla instead of IE
5: through process of elimination

Main pc :

1 Windows XP + Sp1 + All (hot)fixes

2 games , surfing , gaming , burning , etc

3 2 viruses , 4 trojans and countless data miners

  • GriSofts free antivuris tool
  • AdAware
  • popup killer
  • alternate e-mail reader (Incredimail)
  • alternate browser (MyIe2).
  • Quarterly backup (image) of harddisks using Ghost or Drive Image Pro
  • SecPol.msc with tight settings (E.G. NTLMv2 communication ONLY). I’m still busy researching of IPSec is desirable/possible on my systems without using a Certificate Server. NTFS + EFS only.

Webserver

1 Windows 98SE
2 Webserver , ftp server , telnet server
3 IRQ failures , nothing much else
4 Automatic maintenance , scandisk , defrag , virus definition files updates and automatic storage of extensive logfiles. Remote desktop possible via TightVNC on the intranet only. All things password protected.
Even if this system would be hacked by people on the internet or intranet (by hooking into my network , which would require breaking in my home) , they cannot access all other systems because of the tight security settings on the other systems. The worst thing they could do is to destroy the content on this machine , of which an image is available. The system could be up and running within 30 minutes.

5 Hardly no problems , but windows updates are still done by hand (because i’d hate to have Windows media player 9 installed "automagically ")

  3. Spyware:(, General Slowdown Of The PC After Time.
  4. Anti Virus, Don’t Download Unknown Things, Firewall, Don’t Let My Brother Touch My System, Regular Backups.
  5. Either Go InTo The System And Put My Knowledge To Work:p Or Norton Ghost If I Can’t Fix It.

Main PC:

  1. Dual Boot 2 x WinXP Prof. with sp1 and hotfixes
  2. One “boot” for video-edit only, other boot for internet, games, burning,…
  3. nothing that really annoys me (except the amount of hotfixes)
  4. Router with firewall, no Outlook, filters on e-mail that refuse all topics that start with “FW/ forward”, other people can only acces the pc with a Guest-account, nobody but me can acces the video-edit boot, important files on mirror-RAID systems/SCSI, regular reinstall
  5. Check for suspicious programs with task manager, run Adaware or scan the HD on virusses with another PC. If that doesn’t solve it, reinstall. (especially the video-edit boot doesn’t like much fooling around with drivers or other repair-actions)

  4. Run Disk Cleanup, Scandisk, Defrag and Housecall Virus Scan once or twice every month.
    Format system every 6 months.
  5. Don’t need to fix much, fix more of my friends systems heehee.
    I’m a computer tech so most of its pretty easy.

    After graduation of college, just e-mail, internet, chat needs.
    Now that I started MCSE & CISCO, I think soon to be much much more.

    I think I run into all of these but my software prevents fatal damage.

    a. Ad-Aware
    b. Spybot
    c. Norton Corporate
    d. System Mechanic
  5. How you fix problems
    Very carefully

    home - downloading, testing apps
  3. windows services running for no apparent reason.
    autoupdates that i dont remember giving permission to run
    (parents computer) hotbar, as of late
  4. open stuff that might mess things up on the test comp
  5. task manager for unwanted progs + msconfig to keep them out
    adaware for hotbar
