Tesco 8x - DVD+R-DL:RICOHJPN-D01-067

Tesco are selling Double Layer DVD+R 8x own brand media here in the Republic of Ireland. The price is 3.49 euro for five media pieces in slim cases. Hard to get hold of, selling well.

As far as I know the price will expire\change on January 09, 2009.

Here is where the ‘bargain’ popped up and was discussed on an Irish forum. (boards.ie)

Users report success with various ‘consoles’ and general use.

Here are some pictures of the media and packaging:

[ DVD Identifier V5.0.1 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]

I am using an LG-GSA-4163B with a modified 106 firmware. Media code imported using:

MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool for DVD-Writers

http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE/

I can burn the media at 2.4x. No problems playing video DVD’s on various DVD players, including some fairly awful and fussy Philips slot loaders.

This is where things get interesting… The inner sleeve of the media says:

Produced in China for Tesco Stores Ltd.

I always assumed that Ricoh Japan was a ‘Made in Japan’ product, is the media code, ‘fake’?

The Dye on the media is nice and dark, no problems with video playback.

The inner ring of the media is totally clear, no identifying marks, logos, or numbers.

If a Freaks member wants further testing, please advise me on what applications to use. Please note I only have access to an LG in my main computer, but do have access to a Liteon built into an Acer laptop, as well as a TSST drive in an HP laptop.

I’ll consider sending out a single item of media to a forum veteran, if curious. Feel free to PM.

Hi mea_culpa,
these Tesco media have faked MID code and were made by Umedisc’s Chinese subsidiaries - Jilin Quingda and Henan Kerry.

Cheers pepst. I knew it was too good to be true. Having said that, for general video, they behave ok. I will not be storing anything long term on them.

This media has not made it over to the UK yet but I’ll be keeping an eye out for it. ( I work in merchandise planning for said company)

It is a different style packaging, compared to the style we have now though, so it may well be a new product.

Wow…your 4163B burned those successfully, and the discs playback fine?!

I’m impressed. The 4163B (or at least the one I owned), while being a legendary drive , is usually really picky over media quality

Maybe the success is due to the lower burn speed used…

Arachne, I didn’t hold out much hope. I was reluctant to go into Dublin and pick up a new drive just for this batch of media. I’m not bothered by the slow burn speed, as I can surf etc while it does its thing.

It is a fussy drive, I know this all too well from experimenting with DL a good while back.

I’ll read up on scanning burnt media for quality. I have access to a Liteon. The media has only been used for DVD Video so far, no data or console testing done.

Just to add, the LG GSA-4163B was in storage (from new) until a few months ago. That’s the reason for still having it in my set up, the LG GSA-4120B passed away…

Hopefully at least some some of those new Tesco DVDs will have UMEDISC-DL1-64 MID. :stuck_out_tongue:

Which Litey do you have?

BTW, the Sammy (TSST) drive might burn the media OK, as well as the Litey - both are usually pretty tolerant of media quality

If you download and run CD-DVD Speed, you can run a disc quality scan with that - but the scan speed depends on the model of LiteOn drive

Edit: BTW, I love that bit in your sig - “The Graveyard”

Well, you’re with some of the drives so long, you almost want to leave milk and catnip out for them, pets. Then, when that day comes, out to the garden with a spade and the drive in a shoebox…

LOL!! True

I get quite attached to my drives…hence the pet names (Litey, Sammy, Pio etc etc) :o

Then, when that day comes, out to the garden with a spade and the drive in a shoebox…

Yep, definitely

I found some of these today

They were £6.97 for a 5pk, so rather expensive. I’ll give them a burn later.

Now before pepst asks

DVD+R DL L0 80902 R
K47C4691103222911 (I think - VERY hard to read)

Pictures as above

I haven’t touched mine since posting. Maybe at the sale price they were borderline acceptable, but not at the price you purchased them at. No offence meant to you.

Just bought them out of interest really. The peform pretty well for fakes

Burn with Pioneer 215L:

you know sooner or later the faked media on some things is going to be better then the originals
