System Error for samsung DVD-R120

I have a Samsung DVD-R120 recorder. When I insert a new DVD-R disc and try to record I get the message “system error” on the tv screen and on the DVD recorder screen I get the message “wait”. It will stay there for a while and I have to force it to shut off by holding the power button for about 5 seconds. Now I can turn it back on and if I try to record again I get the same system error message.
Does anyone have experienced the same behavior? Any recommendations/solutions? I have not updated the firmware yet, I am thinking of doing that next.

Sounds like a defective unit…return for a FULL REFUND.
