Sun Power 99min CD-R: Most confused media ever?

Happy New Year everyone. Perhaps this will amuse you and add some good entertainment to your New Year:

Sun Power “99 min” CD-R:

Manufacturer : unknown
Code : 96m43s33f
Disc Type : CD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 3: Long Strategy (Cyanine, AZO)
Recording Speed : n/a
Capacity : 79:59.74
                      703 MB
Additional Capacity : n/a
Overburn Capacity : not tested

Claims to be “99 min / 900 MB” even though 99 min = 866 MB. Also the Media code says it’s “96m43s33f.” I burned one on a PX-W4012A in Plextools Pro 2.18 and it died at 95:56.44.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more confused brand of CD-R. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t have any Plextor Premium or Liteon CD-Rw drives, so I can’t provide you with any scans, unfortunately.

false advertising? :stuck_out_tongue:

English pages unavailable, but according to the table, The PX-W4012A is only a 94:59 writer - between 94 and 95 is probably just a case of how the failure is determined.

The media code, though in m/s/f format, is not a length.

For “extra long” use, drives fall into several distinct groups:

  1. No overburn, cannot extend beyond the 79:xx ATIP length.
  2. Minimal overburn (I had one that went to 83:59), limited extra capacity
  3. 89:59 limit (quite common)
  4. Above 90, but not up to 99
  5. 99 minute, full capacity

This should help you do the 99min CD

It’s a bit out of date but it should allow you to burn at least 850MB onto the discs.
