I recently bought 200 TY's (Value DVD-R packaging) from Shop4Tech. Although they were advertised as 4x discs, I ended up getting 16x TYG03's. Normally, I'd be thrilled about getting faster media, but my 1640 isn't too fond of these discs (it did much better with TYG01's & TYG02's).
I've tried a couple things including burning at different speeds, different firmware and a strategy swap. Below are my disc quality scans. Although they all have pretty good quality scores, the PIE's are ridiculously high, and playing the discs in my DVD player shows evidence of visual noise and pauses.
The scans are
- 12x burn using BSOB
- 8x burn using BSOB
- 2x burn using BSOB
- 8x burn using BSLB
- 8x burn using BSOB TYG03 strategy replaced with TYG02's
All scans were made with the 1640 running BSOB firmware (which I've found tends to report higher errors than BSLB).
I know that the media is good because I can burn on the same discs with my Pioneer DVR-109 and get scans that have average PIE < 10, Maximum PIE <= 20, average PIF <= 0.06, and maximum PIF = 8.
This is clearly an example of my BenQ 1640 underperforming. Anyone have any suggestions?
