I got my 4163B in January and it worked perfectly for 5 months. Then something happened - the Verbatim media I have been using the last 8 months that I could burn at 12x was now only burnable at max 8x. Several of the discs I burned are also unreadable in the drive. At the same time I have no problems reading them in my DVD-ROM(!!).
These problems occured approximately at the same time as one of my hard drives died on me. I still don't know if that was from age (3 year old Deskstar that started making those scary metallic spinning sounds...) or from heat. I had installed noice reducing padding 4 weeks earlier, but considering the time it had worked after the installation of the padding I would not think it is heat (also - I have run the computer with the case open and the temperature is more or less the same as if it is closed).
I have no evidence what so ever that it has anything to do with the disc dying, but I thought I should give you the info I have.
