Subtitle problem

I’m converting a movie from AVI format to DVD format. The film is Japanese so I downloaded English subs to go with it. The movie has 2 files aprox. 675 mb each in size. I renamed the 2 subtitle files so they have the same name as the AVI files
eg: movie file name:
[2003] When the Last Sword Is Drawn 7.7@imdb CD1

subtitle file name: [2003] When the Last Sword Is Drawn 7.7@imdb CD1.srt

I’m using the most recent version of “convertXtoDVD” and this software recognizes the subtitles since each of the movie files shows 1 external subtitle stream. However, once I convert the files and I test them using WINAMP or DivX, no subtitles show. In DivX when I try to activate the subtitles, no subtitles are found. The other day I converted another movie that had 2 AVI files and 2 subtitle files and I didn’t think about testing them with DivX or WINAMP and I just went ahead and burnt it to DVD. The subtitles only showed up for half of the movie and I wasted 3 blank dvds trying to burn it. The movie I converted tonight, I would burn it to see if the subtitles will show up, but I don’t want to waste anymore blank DVDs.

So after I convert the files, are the subtitles supposed to show up in WINAMP and DIVX when I test them before burning??? Is there a better way to test if the subtitles work without actually burning to disc? I really want to be able to test to see if the subtitles are there before burning.

Anyway, here is the log of my recent file conversion, can someone PLEASE help me get these subtitles to work? Thanks sooo much

Ok, I managed to get the subtitles to work on my recent AVI to DVD conversion. The reason it wasn’t working was because I needed to install “DirectVobSub” to enable my WINAMP and DIVX players to read the subtitle files. If anyone else has this problem of not being able to see subtitles in their mediaplayer, check out this website, there’s a link there to D/L “DirectVobSub”

http://www.divxmovies.com/subtitles/

Well now that this is taken care of I still need someone to tell me if I’m ready to burn this movie to disc now. Please check my log and make sure the subtitles will show up on my DVD. I really don’t wanna waste anymore blank disks. Thank you for your time.

#3

Ok, now I realize that the file I’m playing with my media player is the original AVI. file. The file is not the converted file in DVD format. I tried to test the converted DVD file to see if it has subtitles, I played it in DIVX and the subtitles didn’t show. I tried to open the DVD files in “power dvd” but I’m not sure how. The converted movie in DVD format consists of 13 files in formats I’m not familiar with : BUP, IFO, VOB files. I’m only able to open the VOB files in DIVX and the subtitles don’t show. Am I testing the file right? Is there another way to test?

Please Help

ConvertXtoDVD creates a DVD-Video structure. So in order to play that correctly, either burn on a DVD or watch via DVD player software (e.g. PowerDVD) on your computer, by opening the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. To display subtitles you might need to press the subtitle button on your player’s remote or enable subtitles in your DVD player software.

#5

hey thanks for the reply. I do have powerDVD except I don’t know how to play DVD files using this software. I can of course insert a dvd disc and it works perfectly but I can’t seem to be able to test my dvd files that are on my computer’s hard drive. Can you help me with this problem? Thanks

#6

In PowerDVD you should have a drive selection button (if not look for an eject button), where you can select “Open DVD files from hard disk”. Then just select the VIDEO_TS folder containing your result of ConvertX.

#7

Ok, my PowerDVD does not have a “open dvd files from hard disk” option, it does have an eject button though but when I push it, it doesn’t give me any options to play a dvd from my hard disk. I just got an update for my powerdvd too, so it should be working fine. What do you think I should do? Thanks

#8

What version is it?

#9

Hi Philipp, thanks so much for your help. The version I have is : powerDVD Main Program Version 5.0. Is this the best version or do I have to get a new one? I just updated this one online yesterday but maybe I’ll have to buy a new powerDVD software package because this version is the one that came pre-installed in my Dell noteboook, what do you think? Thanks again

#10

OK, PowerDVD 5 is really old. The latest version is 7, and I think 6 was the first one to have the ability to load from HD.

#11

Thanks Philipp, I’ll go get the new one then. One final question, by looking at my log above, does it look like the subtitles were converted succesfully??? Thanks Again,

bbutcher

#12

Yes, subtitle file was found and used in the conversion, so it should be fine.
