Strange reading behavior of NEC 3500

I have a good old NEC 3500 that has been working flawlessly for as long as I’ve owned it. But all of a sudden it can’t read DVD’s at more than about 13.5x max. It’s attached to an external USB case. I suspect that something in my system is causing the problem, but what can it be? I attached a screenshot of CD-Speed. All my DVD’s show the exact same graph.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

The read/write speed is being limited because the drive is in an external enclosure connected by USB/FireWire. This is normal behaviour, especially for drives running UDMA Mode 2 instead of the newer UDMA Mode 4.

Thanks for the reply. The strange thing is, it worked like a charm earlier, while it still was connected via USB. Actually it’s connected via USB2, so bandwidth shouldn’t be an issue.
