Strange Burning Problems

In trying to make a backup copy of a DVD-Video–something I am trying for the first time–I have had some strange issues:

(I am using the latest versions of all software, have updated my firmware, have no ASPI layer issues, have tried all book type options, and have used DVD Shrink to shrink files to 6300–though this particular log file at the bottom was another try where I didn’t do that)

First, I tried with DVDClone. The ripping went fine, but it failed to burn even after a few tries.

Second, I tried Nero Recode. Success! Or so it would seem: the final DVD wouldn’t play in any standalone DVD player that I could find. I am backing up simply the main movie files.

Third, I ripped files with DVDClone and burned them with Nero Burning ROM. The final DVD works fine in my standalone player.

So what’s the problem? Well, I can’t recreate what I’ve done. Nero fails to complete any DVD burn now (I’ve included the log file at the end of this post) it would seem. I don’t believe I’ve changed anything. And, furthermore, why does a NERO Recode backup refuse to play in standalone players?

The media I am using is RiDATA 16x DVD+R, the rest of the information should be included in the log file.

If anyone can help me, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’m new to DVD-Video burning and so far it has been nothing but a healthy dose of humility.

This wouldn’t happen to be a Dell computer? There have been numerous complaints about the burners that Dell supplies.

On to the log. Your burner doesn’t really seem to like your Ritek media. And it looks like you slowed down the burn speed to 8x, which is the usual step to recommend when you get media errors like this. My advice is to get better disks. Verbatim 16x or Taiyo Yuden (found online at shops like rima.com or supermediastore.com).

If this is a regular IDE interface drive you might also want to check to see if dma is set correctly for this drive. Look at this thread: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616

I have a couple of suggestions for you but if you would, I would like you to do a test to confirm something for me. Do you have Roxio installed or recquire it for anything important? If not would you remove the following with RoxioZAP & try again. This is strictly up to you & just a request from me.

File ‘Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS’: Ver=8.0.0.212 , size=2560 bytes, created 7/24/2006 3:00:00 AM

If you want to know what I am trying to confirm follow nexuss’s posts in this link, you will link to page #4, follow it through to page #5. It is about your problem.

Thanks for the prompt responses.

Kerry56–it is indeed a Dell laptop. I’ve verified that the DMA is set correctly, I will certainly try different media. I hate to rid myself of this Ritek 100 pack, but there are worse things in life.

Beef Barley–I checked and my Dell has Roxio Drag to Disc reinstalled. After completely removing it (uninstalling then with Roxio ZAP) my burn error continues.

Thank you both for you help, I feel it is likely that my burner simply doesn’t get along with these Ritek DVD+Rs. I will purchase some that you recommended and try again.

Thank you for trying that for me, I am sorry it didn’t work. You could update your Nero & check to see if there is a firmware update as well as the good media advised above. You could also give ImgBurn a shot, it’s free. There are also a couple of comments here on your drive.

This is bad media, use better media like TY and Verbatim.
