Stops half way through a dvd (now a coaster)

Hi, I am trying to backup some of my data files on blank DVD but it keeps stopping half way through.

It was happening for nero 6, so I upgraded to nero 7 but still happens.
I am using a Samsung Writemaster and the media is Imation DVD+R.

This is the log from nero.
Can someone help me work out if it is hardware or software problem please?

It looks like your optical drive is in PIO mode. I see this in the log:

It looks like you are doing a 16x burn. I see this in the log:

You should get the controller running in DMA mode. If you are using an old 40 conductor ribbon cable, you need to replace it with the newer 80 conductor cable (usually called ATA 100/133).

If that is an old drive, it may not support 16x media. If that is the case, you should get 8x (or 4x) media, but you will still have problems if the IDE controller is using PIO mode.

See this thread on how to fix the DMA problem.

I’d suggest 12x as a better burn speed once the DMA problem is fixed.

Thank you for your response.

I also should mention that I have tried burning at slower speeds (even x8) and I am still having trouble.
Also regardless of speed i set it to the burn rate is really slow anyway.

It will be with DMA not correctly enabled.

But i used this set up for over a year with no problems. I dont see why I would suddenly need to get new cables. I changed Device 1 transfer Mode to “DMA if available” but Current Transfer Mode is set as “PIO mode” and can not be changed. I think this is because of the cables I am using.

I just burnt a dvd successfully, the failure seems to be random.
However, while i set the write speed to 8x it actually wrote between 1.0 and 1.5x.
I think whatever causes it to write really slow is the same problem that can cause it to fail.

Is it possible that the dvd rom could be dirty? I tried a cleaning disc, but it was for cd players, might be different for dvd?

Just follow the information in the thread I pointed you to. Deleting the IDE controller involved & rebooting should fix this for you.

Windows drops the device from DMA to PIO modes after getting read or write errors & the easiest solution is to follow that thread.
