Splitting a large encoded mp3 audio file

I am trying to split a large mp3 file (approx 120 mb recorded in 16kps approx 3 + hrs long) It’s an audio book (New Testament) that I think is encoded. I want to cut it into many smaller parts. With music files (that are shorter) I would just burn it as an audio file to CD and then rip back to the HD and Voila!. All encoding would then be gone. This file is too large to burn as an audio CD. I’m stumped as to what to do. I am currently using a trial version of Nero Ultra 6.6. I’m not sure if the final version will enable me to do what I want to do. Any help and direction from you guys who know your stuff would be appreciated Thx Chas

You could just cut the mp3 file directly using something like mp3butcher.

Try to use nero wave editor.

Thanks for the advice but I already tried to cut it with “Mp3 Splitter” which normally works great. But I’ve noticed that with any Albumwrap files it can get funny about recompressing the file and gives a debugger message and refuses to cut the file. This file isnt an ALBW file but it gave an error message about encryption or something like that.

You could try decompressing it with RazorLame+LameEnc, then cutting the wav.

Sorry, never used Mp3 Splitter.

Try nero wave editor; it have many tools, is rather simple to use, and should be included in your nero installation.

I ended up slowly experimenting with the Nero Wave editor and after about 45 minutes was able to split the file into tracks. I havent even used the DVD burner on my PC yet so I’m sure I’ll be browsing the forum again when I take that plunge. Thanks to all you guys for the advice. See ya, Chas

Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

GoldWave would have also done the job. I find GoldWave to be very good at handling even the most poorly encoded audio files.

btw… shouldn’t this have been posted in the Audio forum rather than the CD & DVD Copy Protection forum?

Oh Boy! I, being new to the site, tried to repost on the audio board right after posting here. I was quickly advised this is against the rules. So I’m stuck here forever being corrected on my mistake. Anyway you all have been a real help Take Care

If you’ve got a different question that’s audio related it’s fine to post it on the audio forum, likewise a hardware question can be posted to the hardware forum.

What is not liked is posting the same question into 2 or more forums at the same time.

For audiobook splitting I recommend a tool like AudiobookCutter. This tool splits large audiobook MP3 into small chapters automatically. Take the small files and burn them on CD.
Audiobookcutter is free
