Speed of pci slot in Megabytes?

Does anyone here know if a regular pci slot is fast enough to handle a firewire moving at full speed? I mean If you have a fast system but cannot get 20x burn speeds with an external enclosure then where is the bottleneck?? PCI slot?? firewire?? or firewire chip in ex. enclosure??

Can someone here please give me an accurate answer as to how many MB/S a pci slot can transfer??

The bottleneck is to search within the chipsets used on the mobo and the enclosure(s).

In theory the PCI bus can handle your 20x burn with easy (infact the bus can handle alot more than that).

The usual bottleneck for using external devices are the chips used at each end to convert the data from one form to another. For external burners the bottleneck is usually in the bridge chip in the enclosure or a poor firewire / usb driver chip.

A standard PCI slot has a maximum transfer rate of 32 bits at 33.33MHz or 133MB/s. Some later revisions are even faster.

 With this even on good 2002 2003 builds people should get way more than 20x no prob. with good chipset. Thanks alot for the posts.

 With my macally I can hit 18x right now, I this was only my first try though after I got it back. I'll post some pics.
