SOSW-852S Firmware:P9S2 Need help!

Please help me!!!

Heres my problem:

I recently bought a Slimtype DVD±RW from Ebay for my Dell Inspiron 8200.
Everything was fine and dandy, until I tried to burn a dvd using a verbatim disc (MCC 004) The DVDRW’s firmware does not have this disc listed in its firmware, so it defaulted to 2.4x. THe problem is , at about 10 mins of burning, the drive freezes, and I end up with a coaster.

I went through this forum and read all about updating firmware, etc.
Now, my DVDRW came with P9S2 firmware. Which, I have not been able to find anywhere online. I went to LiteOn’s website and downloaded the latest firmware patch for the 852S. When I tried to install the firmware, the program said that the drive does not match. So, I emailed LiteOn tech support and asked about my problem. They informed me that this drive is not one of their direct ones… and that I would have to contact the vendor. However, the vendor (ebay seller) does not return my emails.

So I started experimenting with all the firmwares I’ve found that contain the MCC004 disc. I tried PFS1, PSX1, PSX3 (latest by LiteOn), 6SO7, P3S4 etc.
The PSX3 from liteOn would make the drive freeze when I put any discs in. it was scary because I would have to put a paperclip into the emergency hole, and remove the disc, while the drive just spins wildly!!

Only two of these actually worked, to the point that I could read and burn discs. they were PFS1 (Sony I believe), and 6SO7.

The problem is: running any of these two firmwares causes the drive to make noises I would never expect from a cd drive i.e. rattling (like gear a gear skipping teeth).

What can I do to make this drive accept the latest firmware from Lite On?
I am throwing myself at the mercy of this forum. please help!!

Here is what Nero infotool and Omni patcher say about my Drive:

to flash your drive with newest liteon firmware (PSX3) you need flashfix: http://digi.rpc1.org/flashfix.htm

#3

I tried that. the problem is, It wont work with it. If I flash it with PSX3, any disc I put in will just spin. the drive will not respond to ejection commands. the light just remains steady.

#4

Mannyz, how did you go?

#5

No Luck.

The DVDRW had the same problems as before. I tried PST3 alone. that didn’t work. So I updated it to PSX3. that had the same problems as before.
needless to say, I returned the drive to it’s original firmware.
I think I have a lemon!!!

#6

I think the P9S2 firmware is total shit! I bought a sosw-852s and it has the p9s2 firmware on it. Needless to say its a crap drive too. Im using Ritek, Prodisc, and Sony DVDs and all of them just just freeze during burning and i have to hold the power button and shut off my laptop to get the dvd to come out.
Any new info on this drive and the firmware or whatever is greatly appreciated.

#7

Freeze during burning??? First, you should probably try something that’s a bit newer than 15 months old (and incidentally, it’s also the oldest known Pxxx firmware!). PFS3 would be a good firmware to try. Second, usually burn problems just result in bad burns, not freezes (in fact, I’ve never heard of a burn freeze until now). I wonder if there could be a software problem as well… but first, try updating the firmware.
