I am providing these results from CDRs burned AT LEAST 2 years or so ago. They have been kept in CD Cases or CD Wallets for the duration, and NO physical damage is on them. All CDs were burned with either a Ricoh 6200A (latest firmware), Ricoh 7040A (latest firmware), or Ricoh 7200A (latest firmware). Some tests are not quite the full capacity (74 or 80 min), but are relatively close. These results may be helpful to those who have stored media on these specific mediums and are woried about the CDRs data corruption.

Sony media is sometimes sold with a Sony ATIP, and sometimes with an ATIP from another maker. Let’s try limiting this thread to media that is identified as having been made by Sony, and post the others in their respective threads.
Sony-made media seems to be another one that is fairly intolerant of burning too fast. I recommend burning ti one notch slower than it’s rated speed, until you are comfortable that it will perform well at higher speeds.

Drive: LTR-52246S F/W 6S02, 700MB image
This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Phthalocyanine
ATIP Lead-in = 97m 24s 15f
Norminal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = SONY(40X)
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 40X

I tried burning these at 52x by turning SB off, but they only got up to 74%, (43x), before the drive slowed to 24x. the total time at 52x was 3:05, slower than burning at 40x. There were no read errors on the disc however.

Sold as Sony 48x, is probably Acer media.
This burn failed at 98% with Nero indicating “Write Error”. It’s not too difficult to see why.
Scanned at full speed.

Burned in LTR48125S, firmware 1S07, burn size 700 Mb Divx.

ATIP (from Smartburn 3.1.6)

Drive Type = CD-RW
Disc Type = CDR
Material = Phthalocyanine
Lead In = 97:24:16
Lead Out = 79:59:74
Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB
Manufacturer Maybe = SONY Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 48X (Write)

Bought these discs in a 50 spindle, branded That`s write!
Will test some more, to see if this was a one-off, or the entire spindle is as bad. Anyone care for a frisbee match? :stuck_out_tongue:

The spindle looks like this:

Now this is NOT GOOD! :a

#11

Burned in LDW-401S, firmware ES0J, burn size 700 Mb Divx.
ATIP (from Smartburn 3.1.6)
Drive Type = DVD+R/+RW
Disc Type = CDR
Material = Phthalocyanine
Lead In = 97:24:16
Lead Out = 79:59:74
Nominal Capacity = 702.83MB
Manufacturer Maybe = SONY Corporation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 40X (Write)

Now this is really interesting. I burned a couple more discs on my 48125S, same poor results as above.
Then I burned a couple of discs on my 401S, with totally different results. The conclusion must be that my 48125S doesn`t like these discs?

Another interesting find was that a disc burned in the 48125S and scanned in the 401S came up with far fewer errors, and a different image than the scan above. Instead of the molehill in the middle I got the more usual slope in C1 errors at the end of the disc, but not that high, 432 max.

Plextor CD-R Premium f/w 1.05 data image 198 MB
PlexTools Pro v2.12 CD/DVD Copy -> Image

Manufacturer : Sony
Code : 97m24s11f
Disc Type : CD-R
Usage : General
Recording Layer : Dye Type 1: Long Strategy (Cyanine, AZO)
Recording Speed : n/a
Capacity : 22:48.01 200 MB
Overburn Capacity : 26:13.32 (230 MB)

Sold as Sony mini CD-R. A yellow 10-pack, with jewel cases, light blue-green dye like TYs.
There is no speed rating anywhere on the packaging, but both SmartBurn and Plextor drives agree that the max speed is 8x.

               C1 avg............0.9
                C1 max..........16.0
                C1 total......1176.0

A test at 4x show no improvement. Apparently Plextor Premium is not particularly efficient at that speed.

just burned … sold as sony 52x … this was written with an image being read from my dru-710a on the fly …

not bad …

LITEON …

Please help me with this. Is it normal that the C2 error rate is so high?
The CD should be a Sony Supremas burned at 24X.

#15

Two different burns of two different discs.
The 52x burn is fully readable, but the reading curve is far from perfect (image not provided).

I’d expect better results from Sony media, however I’m not a fan of 52x burning. And I don’t think that I’ll ever be. The 24x burn is fine, though. Excellent result if we consider the price of these CDs.

Burned at unknown speed with unknown drive, scanned with an unsuitable drive, sorry for this post being off-topic, but this scan is really funny…
(Oh yes, it is dirty and has scratches, but that’s how my friends treat their CDs. I’m not as anal as some other CDfreaks might be, but I’m still more careful than them!)
