Sony +-RW writer not behaving

I’ve got a Sony DVD±RW DW-D56A drive on my dell inspiron 6000. I’ve burned plenty of DVDs already, but all of a sudden the blanks that I’d been using (cheap +R’s from staples) and the maxell +R’s that I just bought will not be recognized as blank DVD’s. Windows (XP Pro), along with all of my software, recognizes the discs as blank CD’s, and only gives me burning options that correspond to blank CD’s. i.e when I put a blank in, Windows pops up with the options to make a cd with iTunes or with WMP, but that’s it. InterVideo DVDCopy3 only gives me the option to make a VCD, SVCD, DivX, WMV, or Audio CD.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Anyone know what to do about it?

Could be a number of things from ASPI to a shagged Sony unit.
How is it recognised in Device Manager? If okay, is DMA/UDMA
