Sony clarified that the Playstation 4 Pro would not feature Ultra HD Blu-ray support and that it also couldn’t be added through a firmware update. When asked for the reason, the company argued that there wasn’t enough consumer interest.
Of course UHD Blu-ray playback could be added via a firmware update. UHD Blu-rays are physically identical to HD Blu-rays, the only difference is in the files stored on the disk. Reading different files would require nothing more than adding support for these files, which firmware could do. Of course, even if support can be added, it doesn’t mean there is any desire to add support. That’s what Andrew House should have said: “We have no plans to add support in the future.”
