Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7220S burn problems

I just purchased a Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7220S DVD writer and hooked it up with the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard, Windows XP Professional SP2, Nero and ImageBurn programs. I can burn CDs, DVD files on DVD+RW, DVD-R Princo or Sony DVD-R media but I cannot burn a Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media. It goes through the burn process and gives me a message that the burn was successful but there is no data on the DVD. I checked the burned DVD on other computers but there is no data and the media is not usable. It is doing this only with TYG DVD-R media. This very same media burns fine in PIONEER DVD writer in the same machine with the same software. Yes, I have two burners in the same machine. The TYG DVD-R burned in PIONEER plays fine in AD-7220S but refuses to give me a good burn on this media. The only thing I could think of is that the burner is not finalizing the disc but then it doesn’t make sense that it would finalize another DVD-R media and not the TYG DVD-R media. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Didn’t mention what speed you’re burning at. Only way I can think of to toast a T-Y and not the others is to leave the burn speed set to maximum in your burning software. Even a T-Y can be fried at 22X.

@ pramod,

Welcome to the Forum.

Suggest providing an N e r o Burning Log of a ‘Failed’ Taiyo Yuden DVR-R Media on your Optiarc AD-7220S Drive for analyst.

Also have you ensured that your Optiarc AD-7220S Drive has the newest most current up to date available Firmware installed?

Regards,
bjkg

Hi Deanwitty,

It’s a 16x T-Y DVD-R and Optiarc burns it at 8x. Therefore I don’t think the burn speed could be the culprit. I tried burning it at 4x and got another coaster.

Thanks bjkg !!

That’s the biggest problem. Optiarc goes through the entire burn process at 8x and takes almost 9 minutes to burn. The burn is reported as successful both by Nero and ImageBurn. I don’t really remember if you can get a burn log of a successful burn but I will burn another coaster and send you the log if it is possible.

As for the firmware, yes I have the latest firmware.

It appears that the T-Y disc doesn’t get finalized at the end of the burn. The disc obviously is not empty at the end of the burn. The drives cannot read the disc and you cannot reuse the disc as it is not empty anymore.

Logs are always saved by both Nero and ImgBurn. So the latest ones should be there.

Not sure what you mean by “Optiarc burns it at 8x”. Are you selecting 8X or is the drive? Do post that burn log ASAP, but also fire up CDspeed in Nero and see if the info page w/ one of your blanks looks like this. Then load one of your bad burns and see if disc status changes to “closed”. Might try a transfer rate test and or disc quality scan, too. You can save any of those w/ the little floppy disc button top right as png and post them.

Below is the latest Log. I burned with Nero as DVD-Video File but the disc does not show any files on it (the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders are not there).

====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======

Hi Deanwitty:

Let me first thank all of you for taking time out to addresss my problem. I tried saving the CD-Speed info as suggested by you but I would get an error saving the file. I can however see the file saved at the desired location but how do I attach that file to this post. Since I couldn’t figure out how to attach the *.png file, I am pasting all the text file below for your review. Also, please note that it takes annoyingly a very looooong time (more than 5 minutes) for CD-Speed to read this burned disc.

====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======

Pramod:

Curious why you say “it’s a 16x T-Y”:confused:. The disc ID in cdspeed says its an 8x T-Y DVD-R. Wondering if maybe you got your hands on a bad batch of fake T-Y’s. Have to confess, I’m a bit rusty at reading Nero logs:o. Been lucky for a bit now and haven’t needed to use it. Only things that strike me as odd are the video_ts files being modified, and that you’re using ISO level 2 instead of 1. Hopefully one of the real experts around here will get a glance at this and see something I’m missing. Post transfer rate, disc quality, and or scan disc results in the meantime so we can rule out a really bad batch of discs as a possibility. Just scroll down from the posting text box to click the “manage attachments” button. “choose file” for each attachment, then “Upload”. You can then click “preview post” to check before you submit.

Any experts:bow: see something(s) I’m missing?

Hi Deanwitty, it’s my mistake- I thought that the discs were 16x. Regardless, what is baffling is that these discs burn absolutely fine when I burn them with the same settings with my Pioneer DVD-RW which is in the same machine. Why optiarc goes through the entire burn process, gives me a successful burn message and spits out a coaster is beyond my expertise on computers. As I have indicated earlier, Optiarc burns all other discs fine (DVD+RW, DVD-R of other brand) except for this TY.

As I have indicated, I tried saving the *.png file but I got an error. The file saved is 0 KB in size. I tried uploading per your instructions but it gave me an error apparently because of the 0 KB file.
