Hello new member here.So sorry if some one has asked this ? before.

i am trying to update the firmware on my Sony/nec Ad7191a dvd burner ( with lightscribe)

i have gone to the sony site and found the list of available updates

however i saw this message

Dear customer, please don’t try to flash a S-ATA device with a P-ATA firmware and vice versa. You could damage your drive in doing so.

I don’t know all that much about these things so how do i find out what firmware version i have and which firmware i need? (s-ata or p-ata).I am using Windows o/s

the dvd burner is ide and manufactured in oct 2007
any advice help would be much appreciated :iagree:

quick update

used nero info tool i see that i currently have firmware version 1.02
latest firmware version up dates i can find are …

1.05 for P-ATA
1.02 for S-ATA

so is it S-ATA or P-ATA…?

thanks

If you really have a 7191A, then it’s IDE not SATA.
So the f/w you want for P-ATA (just another term for IDE).
Note in the attached NEC have made an error.
In the red box it should read 7191A not 7191S.

Hi soulsurvivor.
Just to be sure i took the drive out of the computer according to the sticker on the top of the DVD burner it is a Sony NEC Optiarc inc AD-7191A with the light scribe function, The box is not to be found and the drive was brought new so i’m assuming the sticker is correct. Its the same one as in the photo in the link

probably a stupid question but what is the difference between PatA and Sata, and why 2 different firmware versions

thanks for the help and info.

Check out these links:

Your drive is P-ATA(IDE).
The different f/w is required because of the different connection type.
In theory the end result.
Write quality/compatibility, should be the same.

many thanks:bigsmile:

Have been on the website and have updated to firmware version 1.05 as recommended,
according to Nero info tool it seems to have worked o.k.Have not tried the burner yet
so can’t say if there is much difference from the old 1.02 firmware it had on it before.

Why couldn’t they make life easier by putting IDE insted of making it complicated ( P-ATA/S-ATA)

Well PATA and SATA are the prevailing interfaces. Expect to see them around a lot more… IDE is moving to legacy status
