Hello CDFREAKS,
Any one out there familiar with the Sony DWU-10A. I’ve seen this drive advertised on the E-buyer website for
£99. I’m very tempted as i’m looking to purchase a DVD writer.

Q1… Are you restricted by what you can copy…what’s it like with
securom etc.etc?

Q2… What are the performance gains compare to similary price
DVD writers?

Q2…Can you obtain writing speed of DRU-500A with a firmware
upgrade?

As always a big thank you for taking time out to read this post and for any replies that may follow.

I’d like to ask what is this model?
I know DRU-500A series and DRU-510A series.

I’d like to ask you these:

  1. what’s the difference between 500 and 510 ?

first is older and 2x - while - latest is new model at 4x ???

and

  1. DW-U10A is what? completely different model code! Is another series? is a professional version while others are consumer? what is it? newer? older? cheaper? what ?

Thanks a lot !!!

Thanks to JAN70 and PASALIMANIUS for their replies. Having
created this post quite a while back and with no replies, i decided
to go for the LITEON LDW401S. At time of original post the LITEON
was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I have managed to
track one down and i’m expecting delivery on Thursday 2nd of
October. Cant waaaaiiiiiitttttt!!!.

Hello, could you tell me, why did you decide to get LITEON at last (instead of the SONY) ???

There is a little mixed up with OEM versions?

Does anyone knows EXACTLY which version is the OEM of which ?

RETAIL VERSIONS OF SONY writers:

DRU-500A
DRU-510A

OEM VERSIONS:

DW-U10A and
DW-U14A (recently found somewhere in this forum)

Until today everyone considers the U10A as the OEM version of the 510A !

But there is the opinion that U10A is the OEM of the 500A !
If this is so, then U14a is the 510A’s OEM ???

If this in not true, then U14A is OEM version of which ???

U10A is sold as “new drive”. Also, we know 510A is Sony’s new drive (500A being six months old). Sony sites do not say anything about OEM versions!!!

Does anyone knows for sure?

Hi Pasalimanius,
The reasons for inquiring about the Sony drive
was that i found it impossible to get hold of the LITEON DVD Writer. Yesterday Friday 3rd October my preorder LITEON drive
arrived. Installation was a breeze and it’s a pleasure to use.
I’ve backed up 15 movies so far using the SONIC MYDVD software
that comes with the burner and so far everyone of the backups
are absolutely heaven. You’ll be hard push to tell the original from
the copy. The media i used for backing up is RITEK purple 4.7 gb
DVD+R 4X.
Conclusion is LITEON rules…YEAH BABY!!! Just bring the firmware
on that would allow me to use DVD-R discs.

P.s… I’ll be using a trial version of DVDXCOPY XPRESS over the next few days to compare it with MYDVD. Will post back the advantages/disadvantages of the two softwares.

Here you go:

They are the same hardware, different firmware.

DW-U10A is the OEM of the DRU500A
DW-U12A is the OEM of the DRU500AX
DW-U14A is the OEM of the DRU510A

There is a way for the DW-U10A and DW-U12A to be flashed to the normal DRU500A/AX firmwares, however I am not sure that it is possible for the DW-U14A. Best to check at forum.rpc1.org, or ask around here.

Yes - there is!! I just flashed my OEM drive (DWU14A) with a hacked version of the latest firmware 1.0d. It works like a charm now. Got the firmware update off --forum.rpc1.org–. Woo-hoo!

Thank you! I had imagined so!
Though i didn’t know for U12 !
As they are the “same” practically, why are they loaded with different firmwares? In order to keep the RETAIL versions more efficient? And what these original firmware differences cause? Incompatibility with certain media? I cannot understand why Sony wants its OEM models to be inferior from its retails ???
