Sony DRU-820A cannot Scan Disc

After reading the review of the Sony DRU-820A, I decided to go out and get one. I already have a DRU-800A and it works perfectly – burns well, scans well, no complaints. I installed the DRU-820A and have burned a couple of DVDs with no apparent issues.

The problem: When I attempt to check a disc using either the Disc Quality or Scan Disc tests in Nero CD-DVD Speed, I get an error message stating that the “drive does not support this function.” I had assumed that it did because the review shows results and screenshots from these tests.

I’ve upgraded the firmware to 1.0b and have tried versions 4.11 and 4.51.1 of Nero CD-DVD Speed with no success - I always get the same error. Can anyone help me out before I end up returning the drive?

You did not read carefully enough: “Does not support disc quality (PI/PO) checking” http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/260/9

Your drive uses the Panasonic Chipset which is not capable of quality scanning. If you want RAM and reliable scanning you should go for a LiteOn of the new 165 series or when you prefer Sony a G120A which is the same drive.

Technically that should read “not enabled for quality scanning”…

Michael,
Yes, you’re right. I skimmed :D. Thank you for gently pointing out what I should have read on my own.

BurningFish and pchilson,
Thanks for the additional info.

I’ve returned the drive and will now start looking around for a LiteOn with disc quality (PI/PO) checking. RAM would be nice, and I’ll probably look for the feature, but disc quality checking is important to me.

Thanks again.
