Sony DRU-81A -R to BenQ 1650

Hi Guys,

I have a 1620 that’s worked like a charm and still is. Recently I decided that I might want a back up for it since it’s getting a little old. I decided that I’d pickup, what else, another BenQ. Boy! Was I surprised when I found that all the “good” BenQs were disappearing!

In another thread though someone noted that Tiger Direct had some Sony DRU-810As back in stock and they were normally BenQ 1640s or 50s.

I just received my unit and it’s a DRU-810 -R unit which from what I gather is a BenQ 1650?

What is the procedure to cross flash it to BenQ firmware, and which 1650 firmware would be a good one to use for TY 8x +R inkjet printable discs?

Thanks in advance,

-Bob-

bump

Don’t bump, but do some search here. There are enough threads about crossflashing Philips or Sony drives to Benq firmware.

Michael

I did do a search here and found a thread about the 810a -Rs that were being killed by flashing. By the end of the thread it appeared that it was determined that the -Rs were 1650s, but that had only been confirmed by a couple. That was about it for the 810a -R information.

Though I know the general procedure for crossflashing I was hoping for a more detailed guide for cross flashing this exact drive so that my chances for success were good. I’ve seen similar posts detailing flashing specific drives and no one complained, so I figured this request was reasonable . . . especially since the “good” BenQ drives are disappearing, a source for these drives has been found but no one knows for how long they will have them, and it’s the holiday season so many are very busy and don’t have time to scan tons of posts . . . I think a quick post detailing how to flash this exact drive (what flashing software to use, what new firmware to install, etc.) would be much appreciated by those who are searching for one of the last “good” BenQs.

If you still don’t understand.

 1. make sure your drive is a -R model.
 2. grab BQFlasher from the sticky at the top of forum
 3. grab 1650 BCIC firmware from BenQ site
 4. unzip firmware and flash with BQFlasher
 5. reboot the computer
 6. done

And by -R you mean? I Have a DRU-810A its a RW LOL you think i would b ok?

ok im going to try the firmware for the BENQ DW1650 DVD-RW BCIB there are alot of diff types wish me luck.

The Sony 810A-R is a BenQ DW1650, you can flash it, but you will cancel any warantee you might have by doing so. Good Luck to you and welcome to the forum.

Ok allan i was really confused about alot of different info im getting and still kinda am. let me explain: I have read EVERY POST on this subject gotta teel ya CDFreaks has the most, but at the same time alot of people are contradicting one another on this page - http://club.cdfreaks.com/f92/benq-how-flasher-171380/index2.html
guy says:
"Make sure your SONY DRU-810 drive isn’t a SONY DRU-810-R because if you try crossflashing it to BENQ 1640 firmware you’ll kill the drive. There’s a thread about it in here."
And i think your saying the opposite. i have also read the difference is THe -R is BenQ1640 and the one without the -r is BenQ1650 and by putting the wrong firmware you will kill the drive. Sorry i dont have time to find the link right now but you get my point. Any i found the solution: If ANYONE is thinking of crossflashing you should consult this page first
http://tdb.rpc1.org/
Just select your Drive and it will take you the proper firmware.

I do have 2 questions tho. .

#1. Has anyone sucessfully cross flashed a Sony DRU-810A minus the "R"
And with Exactly what BenQ Firmware cause i was going to use the dw1650bcic firmware and wasn’t sure.

#2. I downloaded this “810A_1.0f.zip” from the sony website and it seems to b the newest update. “I think” and am not sure but it seems to be BenQ with sonys name on it. IE: When i use DVDdecrypter and choose the BenQ my sony shows up and WORKS!! if this new update allows the sony DRU-810A to work with, and AS a BENQ Drive y are people still flashing???

Sorry for the long post i did ALOT of research. But maybe not enough.
