Sony dru-510a, nero illegal disc dvd-rw

I never have any problems writing cd-r, dvd-r but when it comes to dvd-rw, dvd+rw - nero doesnt even attempt to burn and gives me an illegal disc error every time! I’ve tried different media e.g. TDK, Philips, Verbatim, etc. but to no avail.

Please Help! Here is the log:

OK, first of all, enable DMA on those optical drives, then if you still have a problem, post back, and someone will more than likely try to help further.

…and update Nero to 6.6.1.4.

Good advice. I knew I’d miss something

Enabled Dma and have updated nero but still same problem. I’ve used other programs as well like recordnow so it isn’t nero. I just don’t get why every disk type except dvd±rw work fine!

Please help

Were the +RWs booktyped??

What does booktyped mean?

I now know wat booktyped means but apparently it can not b done on sony drives. I used to be able to write dvd±rw without any trouble.

i used to have this exact drive, the 510a. it put out lovely burns on riteks back in the day that still score in the 90+ percents for quality checks.

'cept one day it stopped burning at 4x, and then stopped doing rw burns altogether. it’s a older drive, it might be on it’s way out. today it only burns on -r media at 2x speed. sux. :frowning:

You should try with recommended -Rw media - your drive is old.

Wot do u mean recommended -rw media? I’ve only had this drive for 2.5 yrs!

This is old compared to recent burners.
I think you can be hapyy that yours lasted that long.

Recommended -RW media is made by Verbatim and TDK.

I have already tried with verbatim/tdk/sony dvd+rw/-rw.

How come I can write dvd-r/+r and cd-r?

Obsolete Nero version and crap softwares installed that interfere, I think!
Also clean the drive.

Nero version: 6.3.1.26 (Nero Express)

The drive is older, and technology wasn’t perfected probably back then - I mean some drives today still have trouble with RW media.

And just because it can burn other media fine, doesn’t mean RW media has to work too. One format can just stop working, while others keep on chugging. Trust me, I’ve had this problem with this particular drive myself. Formatting doesn’t fix it, and neither will moving it to another computer. But try! Maybe I am wrong, but regardless, the drive is oooooldddd.
