[qanda]This thread is about the Sony DW-D56A. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I have a dell inspiron 9300 with a Sony D56A slim drive. I’m running XP, fully-updated.

I uninstalled a bunch of software last week and believe I may have fallen victim to the “uninstall dvd burning software and lose your drive.”

I cannot read anything using that drive, no dvds, cds, DVD-rs, etc. When I try to burn a DVD using Nero Burning Rom I get the “please insert an empty disc to write to” error.

When I use windows explorer to view files on cds, dvds, dvd-rs on my pc, I get no response nor no error messages. I tried troubleshooting the drive but none of MS’s basic fixes seem to work.

What should my next steps be? I really am a newbie at this issue.

Couple of things…is your drive visible in Device Manager, and if so does it have a yellow exclamation mark/error code when you click it’s Properties?

Also, do you have Alcohol or Daemon Tools installed?

I thought I uninstalled Alcohol 120%, but I still have a version with a 2006 date. I have no memory why I wanted to use it, but I probably haven’t used it in 2 years.

I don’t know what Daemon Tools are/is?

I checked the DVD drive out using Device manager, but everything looked normal- no yellow warnings or anything. No driver updates, recent or not. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I would really love it if someone could point me to a better troubleshooting website than Microsoft’s because it’s not helping. I’m really lost here.

thanks!
