Hello,
I’m absolutely new to this topic. Please can you help me? I’ve got a nec nd2500a burner with FW version 1.06 (checked with Nero). Last week I bought a package of 25 DVD-R from Sony 1x-16x compatible. I was badly surprised that my burner wouldnt accept them. Before I wrote this message I checked some of the threads on this forum. So I downloaded dvdidentifier to find out the manufacturer id of the dvd-r’s.

Is it possible to flash my nd2500 to make it accept the 16x sony dvd’s? I’m afraid that I could damage my burner doing something wrong while flashing. what do I have to pay attention to? can somebody give me a step by step instruction? On the nec homepage I read those instructions:

Firmwareupdate ND-2500A - Important Information:

[F/W revision Brands]
1.0A (WIN) - 11-Mrz-2005

You will find information for firmwareupdate changes here or on our FAQ: http://www.de.nec.de
-> Support and Service -> Technical questions -> Optical storage -> DVD / DVD Writer

This Update works only with NEC ND-2500A (retail&bulk) drives, not with OEM releases. OEM means part of a full PC package or external USB or FireWire variant of this burner. For OEM products contact directly your dealer, distributor or manufacturer of PC- or USB/ Firewire- package for service, support and new firmwareupdates.

You can update from Firmwareversion 1.06, 1.07 and 1.09 . You can verify your current firmware with NERO InfoTool: http://www.nero.com

Pls note following instructions for update procedure:

Connect drive to secondary IDE channel as Master (Use standard UDMA-2 IDE cable)

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

Under Windows 2000 & XP login as administrator

Update without DMA mode, under Windows XP & 2000 in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode

Disconnect all external USB/ FireWire devices.

Deactivate virusscanners, active desktop programs and packetwriting agents

Do not turn off power during the updating process.

Note: Warranty will be lost during false updating procedure, especially unofficial modified firmwares were used before.
In such cases we could not offer you a solution any more. You have to repair it by cost then.

INSTALLATION: After unzipping file pls. double click on "K250GNA0.exe" file, follow instructions.
After, you have to reboot your system.

If you have problems after updating your drive use following steps:

1.Deinstall all your burnsoftware(s), also cleanup registry, e.g. registry cleaner can be found here http://www.nero.com

2.Update your mainboard driver(s). Contact manufacturer of your mainboard/ PC package for newest one.

3.Reinstall and update your burnsoftware.

Is it very important to follow the instructions exactly as described above? Sorry for my lack of knowledge and thanks in advance.

Have you read the big NEC FAQ in this subforum?

Please read in there.

If you go here you see Dee’s 205D firmware.
This is very recent & recognises the Sony -R media you have.

All of Liggy & Dee’s firmware is very reliable & should be a safe update.

thank you, so far. if I use binflash, do I have to connect my burner to secondary ide channel as master as described here? (source nec):

Disconnect all slave hardware from IDE secondary Master

Update in Windows "Safe Mode"

I’ve never done anything special when flashing firmware, other than ensuring I’ve nothing running , Explorer included & have no disc in the device. It’s actually probably not a bad idea to boot in safe mode but I’ve never done it & haven’t screwed any burners yet.

I think with the firmware I’ve suggested you just run the .EXE as it’s complete with flasher.

@TimC: Thank You very much! I Just did the flash with Dee’s 205D firmware and it worked. What a relief!
DVD Identifier says I can burn DL media. Is that right?

Thanks Again

Supposedly Yes. That was the purpose of cross flashing to the 2510, the DL version of the 2500.

Again supposedly/allegedly they share the same hardware , just the firmware is different.

Personally I’ve never tried it.
