Software to remove commercials from HD recordings

[qanda]This thread is about the Hauppauge HD PVR High-Definition video recorder. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I’m currently recording over the air HD content on a Happauge WinTV-HVR-950Q. The MPEG2 files look awesome after being saved to my hard drive.
I record alot of sports programming.

I need info on software that will allow me to edit the .mpg file and remove the commercials. I would then burn a copy to a blu-ray 25/50 GB disc. I have an LG BH08 blu-ray burner.

I have saved a 4 hour file in 1080i. The file takes up 32 GB on my hard drive. If I can remove the commercials, it should be below 25 GB.

I have seen similar posts on the site but they are several years old. Any new software thats easy to use and possibly free?

Your best bet would be using one of these three programs: VideoReDo Plus, VideoReDo TV Suite or Womble Mpeg Video Wizard DVD.

There are some free options, like Mpg2Cut2 and Mpeg StreamClip.

Can you play the mpeg2 files directly? Or do you need to author them to blu ray video?
