Software to PW Protect USB drive?

I’ve been looking all over for something (preferable free, but if it’s good I’d pay) that will simply ask me for a password when my USB drive is inserted into any computer.

I’ve found programs that will work from the source computer and only allow certain USB drives. I’ve found programs that lock particular files/folders ON the USB drive, but my ideal is something that asks for a password upon insertion. If the password is correct then I have access to the drive. If the password is incorrect, it stops the drive from mounting.

anyone know of anything like that available? I feel like I’ve been through every software index on the internet plus all the portable apps sites. I must just be missing it…what I’m looking for seems pretty basic (to me at least!)

This is free. So it seems didn’t navigate the website but seems legit.

did you just edit your post?

i dled that thing from buffalo or whatever. it looked like it was going to do what i wanted then it wanted to format my usb drive. hopefully i can find something that works without formatting as I have a u3 drive and there’s no way to reinstall U3 (only comes on drives from the manufacturer).

i sort of like U3 for now haha. (unfortunately there are no decent U3 apps that will do what I want as simply as I want.)

i’ll check out that other site now

Yes I did here’s another link.

Maybe this is what you’re looking for: http://www.truecrypt.org/

T r u e C r y p t
Free open-source disk encryption software for Windows XP/2000/2003 and Linux
Main Features:
* Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
* Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a device, such as USB flash drive.
* Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
* Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
1) Hidden volume (steganography – more information may be found here).
2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
* Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Blowfish (448-bit key), CAST5, Serpent, Triple DES, and Twofish.
Mode of operation: LRW (CBC supported as legacy).

*I guess i have to learn to type quicker  *

truecrypt looks good but also requires a format.

maybe that’s just how they all are. thanks for your input!

this one might be the winner! it has a special U3 installation pack.

No biggie it happens.

I tried to find free and I didn’t know there was I always thought stuff like this was built into the drive by the manufactuer. So I found a new thing to play with now too. :flower:
