Smallest dvd format?

can anyone tell me what the smallest format for video files to fit on dvd-r is? When i put files on as .avi format they take up alot of room on the dvd-r any suggestions?

avi is not a dvd format. For DVD video only mpeg2 dvd compliant is suitable.

avi (mostly mpeg4 divx/xvid) is one of the best choices, only some rmvb/wmv and mpeg4/H.264 could give you a smaller file.

how can i make the files resolution smaller so i can fit more onto the dvd

@thaim
You would have to reencode the video to a smaller size. Are you talking about dvd-video, or some other format, like avi or mpeg4?

There are some different tools depending on what you are working with.

DVD’s are relatively cheap, and reencoding takes a quite a lot of time. It may not be worth the trouble.

Use 352 x 480 Half- D1 size for NTSC or 352 x 576 PAL…
But explain what exactly you’re trying to achieve and the tools/methods used…Explain in details…
BTW, you just resurrected a 3 yr old thread…

Actually you can pick any resolution you want in most conversion software. I don’t recommend it, because the smaller the more horrible the output.

So, first tell us your absolute minimum resolution settings for you movies.
