I have been using a LiteOn 52246s for a little over a year to burn audio CDRs using EAC and Nero. Using Fujifilm (Taiyo Yuden) blanks, I had been able to burn them at 52x with no problems, until recently.
Now it takes forever. Both programs still indicate they are burning at 52x but they are really much slower. To burn a 54 min audio CD using Nero took 9 min 13 seconds! I tried the only other blank I had for comparison which was the 24x CDRW that came with the drive. To burn at an indicated 24x in Nero, same audio CD, took 3 min 52 sec which seems about right. The discs play and extract fine but the slow burns are ridiculous.
There is a lot of starting and stopping during the write calibration power sequence with the Fujis. Could they have somehow deteriorated? Is the laser dirty? Looking for answers here. Maybe I should try some other media but I don't have any at the moment.
Computer is 500 MHz, Win98SE, EAC 0.95pb5, Nero 220.127.116.11, drive has latest firmware which I don't have handy, Nero speed test gives max burn rate of 84.4x so that's not a problem either.
Thinking I need a new drive,
