Slow burning / firmware issues with LH-20A1

Uh, hi. I bought a Lite-ON LH-20A1 DVD drive from Wal-Mart today to replace what appeared to be a faulty Samsung SH-S182 DVD-RW drive. The problem with the old drive was that it didn’t burn at the intended speed anymore - I told it to burn at 16x and it burned stuff at 8x or so - and it resulted in damaged DVDs. I thought it was a bad batch of discs but I tried three different types and got the same results, so I bought the new Lite-ON drive mentioned above.

I installed it, and it took a bit under eight minutes to complete a burn at “16x”. So I’m wondering if something else may be causing me trouble. Could it be a bad cable? I’m running a readability test on the burned DVD, and it hasn’t given me any errors so far, but I’m wondering if the drive is lowering its speed due to problems with the IDE cable itself.

Any thoughts on the matter? Thanks.

Edit: Whoops! Forgot to mention my Firmware problem! Okay, the thing is, I tried to get updated firmware for my drive (from http://www.liteonit.eu/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=178 ), but the program said my drive wasn’t recognized. The US site wasn’t working for me so I went to the European site. Any thoughts on what might cause that particular problem?
(By the way, I’ve been a patron of this forum for a while but I never registered. So hi!)

I think we should start with a burn log.

How would I go about doing that? I use Nero 6.

Program Files / Ahead / Nero / Nero History Log. Just post the last one but omit your serial #. Copy & Paste.

Okay, here’s the first entry in the log file, pertaining to my new drive.

This is the log for the first disc I burned. I set it at 16x and it didn’t burn at that speed, so. Thank you.

Before we go on to anything else, update your Nero. Do not touch InCD.

Done, now what?

Edit: Wait, I burned a new DVD and copied the history log.
