I recently replaced my DVD burner with a Samsung SH-S182M LightScribe with a read speed of 12X or 21.6MB/sec. My actual read speed is less than 4MB/sec. Prior to replacing this burner my read speed was approx 10MB/sec with my old burner. I’m ripping the DVD movie to my HD. I’m not trying to rip and burn.

The burner is the slave drive on my secondary IDE channel. I have a CD-RW as the master drive on this channel. I don’t have any devices on my primary IDE channel. The system has two SATA drivers. The IDE channel is configured for Ultra DMA mode. I’m using DVDFab Platinum 3.1.5

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The DVD drive has the most current firmware.

UPDATE

I disabled then reset DMA. It increased performance to 5MG/sec. Which is better but still a fraction of the performance I should have.

Above is the log from my most recent dvd copy. The selected drive is not by DVD burner. My Sony CD-RW drive has no media in the drive.

Hi, Frank. You have an unusual drive setup, and I’m not sure what the problem is, although 5MB/s is not too bad, and some discs read faster than others in a given drive. Have you considered putting the burner on the primary IDE channel? You might also try changing the I/O control setting in DVDFab from “Auto” to first ASPI, then SPTI manually to see if that helps. This is located in Common Settings–>Read. I’m wondering if the upper/lower filter situation in the registry is what it should be given your drive configuration, One of the drive experts hopefully will see this and chime in.

Thanks for the reply. While my drive setup is unusual it’s the same drive setup I had with my previous DVD burner with much better read speed.

I have considered moving the burner on the primary IDE channel. Before I do I will try your suggestion then report back.

My Plextor PX-760 is reading at a snails pace as well, only about 2.65 MB/s while it was previously running just fine.
