where are you in the uk. try the computer markets.co.uk for your region. they will be the cheapest, what works depends on your writer.

I own the 8 speed plextor 708a

For the plex all DVD+R discs made by Ricoh/ritek, Mitsubishi or Taiyo Yuden is recommended.

Verbatim
Traxdata
Arita
Ritek
Fujifilm
Memorex
TDK
Plextor

Is just some brands…remember, look for 4X DVD+R of one of these brands…

Here’s a few links…

Which of these discs could I buy confidently?

Which are VERY reliable media that should keep my data or video for years and years

Hi Blindman

I also have a plextor PX-708a and I am very pleased with the Ricoh DVD+R 4x (DRD-4XPC) that I got from blankdiscshop.co.uk. The discs are on the recommended media list for the drive. A k-probe scan is in the dvd media tests thread: http://forum.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?threadid=75451

Any other opinions would be appreciated…

What’s the longevity of Ricoh’s predicted to be?

Hi all, sorry to hijack the thread…

I’m about to buy a pioneer 106 tomorrow and I’d also like to know what the best +R and -R brands are. (available in the UK)

I have the following options from the shop where I’ll be buying the drive and I need to pick up about 5 discs with the drive.

They need to be good quality media for hard drive backups, so I don’t mind paying over a pound each if those are better discs:

DVD Media

ALADIN-MEDIA WHITE DVD-R 4.7GB . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39p
GOGODISC (RED LOGO) DVD-R 4.7 GB . . . . . . . . . . 34p

TRAXDATA DVD+RW 4.7 GB. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . £ 2.50
MONARCH DVD-R 1X (50 PACK SPINDLE) . . . . . . . . . £25

If you are going to buy the pioneer DVR-106, then just upgrade it to firmware 1.07 and burn whatever discbrand you want

I’ve yet to find a disc that do not work in the pioneer with fw1.07, highly recommended drive.

DVD-R 4.7GB 4X LEAD DATA 25’S 01NE. . . . . . . . . . . 94p - is ok quality to my experience (better than princo)

RITEK 4X DVD-R DISC 4.7GB . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . £1.07 - is good quality to my experience.

Thank-you for your reply OC-Freak

At the moment I’m only buying 5 or 6 pieces of media for the sole purpose of backing up my personal files before wiping my hard drive to reinstall windows (uncleanable virus…long story :a)

So the Ritek 4x -R media should be fine then?

This will be my first DVD burner, is there any other things I should be aware of when backing up just files. (I won’t be going into movie/dvd/console backups just yet with it)

If I’m backing up files, is it just the same thing as a CDR in that I can just open Nero, drop the files and folders and burn at full speed (4x) and the backup should be fine?

I get the feeling that there are some sorts of tweaking issues when chosing burner+media+burning software for burning movies or whatever, I’m just wanting to make sure that backing up files is straighforward for now?

Thanks again for the help

  • Odie

Yes, making a data DVD is just as easy as creating a data CD in nero. Just select DVD – ISO DVD, add the files and then burn.

Thanks again OC-Freak.

I’ve now got my drive

The shop keeper ended up convincing me to buy some of their cheaper blanks rather than the Ritek 4x

I didn’t get a discount on the drive (I ususally get trade prices, but it was on special offer.)

However I got 10 GoGoDisc 4x -R media for just 59p each (full price is 69p each). The shop keeper said that GoGoDisc are basically the same as DataWrite/DiscWrite

I’ll give them a try and then possibly get some Ritek next time.

The problem is that I can’t install the pioneer drive :frowning:

I need to remove my Plextor 16x cd writer, but the last screw doesn’t come out, and it seems as if the philips bit has been grinded down so the screwdrivers don’t fit… :Z

I’ve got some metal putty in just now, but I need to wait an hour to see if it dries and can help me take out the screw.

sigh

Could you please identify the discs with either dvdinfopro or dvd identifier

and hen copy and past the information here? We may be able to tell you something about the quality then.

Datawrite uses different manufacturers for their discs…so it could be about anything.

That’s from DVDInfoPro. Neither DVDInfoPro nor DVD Identifier was able to display the manufacterer information

I burnt my first backup cd, however 1 out of the 72 files was unreadable in the nero verification test :a (I updated the drive to firmware v1.07)

That is most likely due to the media…

Have you tried copying the files back to the harddrive from the disc to see if they are really unreadable as nero states?

Oh dear, this doesn’t look very good at all does it?

This is an error test on the second disc I burnt.

Any ideas on whether this would be a faulty drive, or just crappy disks?

I’m going to go swap the 8 remaining discs for the Ritek 4x -R s tomorrow…

  • Odie :frowning:

Deffinitely not good, try burning them at lower speed if possible.

Most likely it’s the media…

Seems like your dealer wants to get rid of some crappy discs

You may try writing at 2X to see if that helps though…as rdgrimes stated.

The test is still running (on this second disc the nero verification test took a lot longer than the first disc as well) and the test results are still bad.

I’d rather not burn any more of these, the first 2 from the pack seem to have given me the general idea on their quality.

I’m on a limited budget, so I better not use any more

These discs say that they are rated at 4x, so I would expect them to burn at 4x.

Tomorrow I’ll have a better idea of whether it’s the media or the drive when I bring home the Ritek 4x stuff.
