I recently put together a new PC using an Asus P5E3 Deluxe WiFi motherboard. The first optical drive I tried in it was the Asus DRW-2014L1T, but media recognition seemed slow (15 seconds to display the contents of a disc after insertion) and copying speed seemed slow (10 minutes to copy a full single-layer DVD-R containing 50MB .rar files to the hard drive). DMA was enabled in the BIOS and in Windows, and the firmware was the latest version. The drive kept showing up with different designations under "My Computer". Sometimes it would say "CD Drive", "DVD-RAM Drive", and possibly others
I thought all this indicated a problem with the drive, so I RMA'd it. The retailer was out of Asus drives, so I got the Pioneer DVR-215D instead. But it's doing exactly the same things, even with the latest 1.18 firmware from Pioneer.
Am I right in thinking those copying/recognition speeds are low? What does the constantly changing device type under "My Computer" mean? Can anybody tell me how to troubleshoot this?
