Sighting of new DVD burner generation

I just noticed that Optiarc have a new drive generation available. They list AD-7280S and AD-7283S drives, but on price comparison sites I also noticed AD-5280S - however no Lightscribe AD-7281S drive.

Did anyone already get hold of such a drive and could verify if Binflash is still compatible?

Comparing the specs with the AD-7260S series, the only difference that I could find was the cache size reduced from 2 MB to 1 MB (save on costs)

Chipset comparisons and differences?

ive tried binflash 1.56. it cant dump the drive but did produce an identify.txt file, which ive posted in the thread mentioned in the file.

Thanks for the file. Should hopefully be pretty easy to add Binflash support.

Someone here has the 7280S and is reporting that it has a Renesas MC-10131 chipset.

NEC SCOMBO8 (MC-10045)
roadmap on site ends at 2008 year, so i think MC-10131 - update of MC-10045.

Has anyone compared the new ad-728X to the older ad-726X/ad-724X? Which one gives you “more bangs for the money”?

Which one should I buy?

If you can get a 7240s or 7260s get it. They all have the same specs, but the older drives have had the firmware wrinkles ironed out.

So far it seems that the AD-726xS is the best so far and as a matter of fact, the AD-7261S should be the best of them all since it has the full electronics needed by the 7263S and obviously the 7260S
