SHW-160P6S firmware issues

Hi everyone,

I have tried looking for the answers for this on Google, and can’t find my question, however this site kept coming up with related questions, so clearly you guys are the experts :)!

Anyway, according to “FLASHMAN’S” Detect Firmware Version Tool and Device Manager, the device is a LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S. It works fine for reading DL DVDs, CDs and everything else, and writes to CDs and single layer DVDs fine. I recently bought a number of dual layer DVDs from Ebay (new, the seller has good feedback and only sells blank media), which say ZERODEFEX DVD+R DL 8.5GB 240mins/2.4xspeed on them. These are the only blank dual layer DVDs I have tried, and they won’t read, they lag the computer badly when I put them in and the light on the drive flashes on and off slowly.

I have downloaded and tried to run every different version of firmware I have seen, all of which have the drive in the same state (works for everything except these DL DVDs). The correct firmware does not seem to work for the drive, I have tried a number of different versions including PS0C, PS04 and PS05, however they all came back with the same error, which says:

No matched drive detected !
This utility is only for LITE-ON DVDRW SHW-160P6S drive.

Detected drives:

OK

Its worth pointing out I have two working drives, a Toshiba and a Lite On plus a Nero (virtual).

Thanks for reading, help is much appreciated!

BLANKS cannot be read, they are blank.

Open up nero cd dvd speed, insert a disc, post the disc info here.

I believe that DL media is crap.

Putting the DL DVD in lags the computer so bad my music stops, but Nero DiscSpeed 4 won’t register there is a blank disk in there ether. The “Start” (in DiscSpeed) option is greyed out, I tried with one of my blank Single layer DVDs to check the software works, sure enough the Start button is no longer greyed out and the correct length value appears. It seems very academic to run a test of a different DVD which I know works.

Just noticed, it does correctly say the type (DVD+R DL)

OK some of the CDs from the spindle (which I thought were all identical but clearly aren’t) you can write to, except when you get to about 2% there is a write error, here is an example log:

Hi,

you are using poor media, and additionally you chose a burn speed that is too high for that discs.

Especially with older drives, Verbatim discs are the only DL media that are some kind of reliable. Watch out for 2,4x rated discs, preferably “Made in Singapore”.

yeah i’m not sure those discs are even in the f/w for that drive. Even the newest f/w. Verb +R DL’s will be though.
