Hello CD FReaks, I have been trying to convert/encode shn files to .wav or mp3 to burn to cd and I must say I have never been so frustrated. I have tried every program/codec that I can think of and either it won’t read the files, error messages, crashes you name it i’ve been there. These are just a few of the programs I have used:

MKACT old & new
DB Poweramp 10 & 11 versions
Xilisoft
Nero 6.6
Winamp
numerous codecs
and numerous other programs that i uninstalled and can’t remember.

I keep reading all these threads and taking advice but nothing is working.
Can you please help me.
I am using Windows XP Home.

Thank You in advance.
Gordie

Look here. it says something about a winamp plugin

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=shn

Tried it once, uninstalled Winamp & d/l version 5.21 pro which is supposed to have the proper shn plug ins, no go. Tried installing shn plugins for winamp 5 same thing. What a F@$#@ nightmare.

Thanks but tried Multi Front End & Trader’s Little helper and no good as well, why would someone create this f$%@ file format if you can’t do anything with it, this is just insane…

have you checked the md5s if they’re available? maybe you have a corrupted file.

I have tried numerous shn files from different audio shows from many different uploads and I have yet to have one single file work.

Hmm Waterwolf, this is the right link for converting .shn files, as drpino pointed out

I use Speek’s multi encoder frontend myself, using WinXP
This is what I did:

  1. download and install the multi encoder frontend
  2. for WinXP, download “shorten-3.5.1.zip”
  3. from this .zip file, extract shorten.exe and cygwin1.dll in c:\windows\system32 folder(XP)

to check if shorten will be working properly, open a commandline prompt and type “shorten -h”, it should show the version of the shorten file

  1. start the multi encoder frontend, in locations tab, fill in the path to “shorten.exe”, press OK
  2. then again in the frontend program select as codec “shorten”, press “options” tab and make sure “use intermediate .wav file” is checked (shorten doesn’t allow on the fly encoding), press OK
  3. remember:conversion to .shn: no -x option(blank)
from .shn to .wav: -x option

Alternatively, you could try foobar 0.8.3 special, .shn plugin is included, encode to.wav

but you could also convert your .shn files to .flac and then to .wav

Gordie,

Try Foobar 2000. It will convert shn, MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4, MPC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC / Ogg FLAC, WavPack, WAV, AIFF, AU, SND, CDDA to .wav or .wma and then you can burn or convert those to mp3 with another program (I use Virtuosa). Find it here: http://www.foobar2000.org/

Hope this helps,
