SHM-165P6S wont burn +R DL Discs

Hi,

I’ve been asking you guys for a lot of help recently, and its appreciated.

I’ve just myself a new SHM-165P6S after rma’ing a ND-4571 (which was totally pants - couldn’t even pick up any discs).
This litey seems to be OK, not perfect scans by any means but I can live with it. It even seemed to burn a DL disc fine yesterday (i’ll post a scan in a bit)

That is until today when I tried to burn a DL disc, which failed half way through with a “power calibration area error send dvd structure boundary information DVD+R DL” error (forgot to copy the exact wording :o )

I then tried again, and this time it spat the disc out before even starting the burn at the “setting L0 capactiy”. It then pretends to close and finalise the disc (I copied the log from ImgBurn) (which it doesn’t as the same disc is now burning in my pio 109)

The discs I am using are Verbatim 2.4x, made in Singapore, which came in a 10 Spindle.
Software is ImgBurn, using a MDF/MDS image.
The drive is running MS0P stock firmware.
I’ve only got HPT ticked in Smartburn. Tried it with it off, same result.

Do dual layer burns take more juice? All other types (+/-) seem to be working fine.

They normally need more power, AFAIK.

Came this media in jewelcases, 10 pcs spindles or 25 pcs. spindles?

Hm, if I recall correctly I had a similar or same error with my 165p6s MS0M while trying to backup to a Ritek +R DL with dvddecrypter.

If I remember correctly I then used DVDshrink to make the image just a bit smaller, and then configured the dvddecrypter to NOT do automatic layer break but configured it to do the layer break a bit sooner…

To be honest I’m not quite sure it was the exact same error with you but you migh want to give it a try and see…Is your source DVD almost completely full recorded?

I’m having issues with my drive, as well. Just got it last night, flashed it to MS0P. Now, mine is in an external firewire case attached to my laptop. Never had a problem with the external case at all. I tried burning to a 4x Verbatim +R DL disc (sorry, I’m not at home and don’t have the media code at the moment) with CloneCD and it spit the disc out with an unknown error. I switched to my internal NEC burner and it burned fine so it’s not the software or my laptop. I haven’t tried any other DVD media but I later used it to burn a cd and it was fine. Anyone have ideas on this one? If you need more info, please let me know what you need. Thanks!!

I can’t see any obvious signs of PSU failure (hanging, restarts).
I just ran a sandra burn in and it was stable.
The verbatim came in a 10pc spindle (As a side note, I’ve burned another 2 from the same spindle in my 109 with no problems)

Imgburn tells me it is using the L0 zone capacity from the image file (1,737,888 sectors), as the layer break is copied from the source (specified in the mds/mdf files). The image in the example above is only around 6.52gb.
It is intresting point, because the burn fails at the point where it is trying to set the “Boundary Information”, i.e. setting the L0 zone in the leadin.

I’ll try to maybe burn another image from one of my movies, see if it helps.

As chef says, the burns take more power - maybe not enough is being provided by the enclosure (although it shouldn’t be a problem if it has it’s own power source).
What type of image is it?

I just got it to start burning a dl image :).

I just used a different image with following stats:

Source File Size: 8,520,642,560 bytes
Destination Media Sectors: 4,173,824
Optimal L0 Data Zone Capacity: 2,081,184
Optimal L0 Data Zone Method: Copied From Original Disc

I dunno why it wouldn’t work on the other image, but what the hell. Maybe a drive/firmware issue with setting the layer break, probabily the same problem as ngk.
Maybe SamuriHL you should try a different image/slightly shrinked image. I know its a expensive solution finding process, £2 each for me!

It was a CloneCD dual layer DVD image. I was trying to make an exact duplicate of one of my DVD’s. Like I said, I was able to burn it on my internal drive with no problem. I ran out of DL discs so I will have to wait til I get some more before I try again. I don’t THINK it’s a power issue but I suppose it’s possible. I’ve never had a problem with this case before…I’ve had other DVD burners in it before this one. Very strange problem. I wish CloneCD would have told me what the problem was.

Well, the thing is, I didn’t process the image…it was an exact duplicate…CloneCD read and write. I’ve never had a problem with this method before. Works fine on my 1673->1693 in my video machine. I just bought this drive so I could have an external drive for the laptop so I wouldn’t end up beating on the internal laptop drive. I’ll mess around with it. If I come up with anything I’ll post back. Might be a while before I get to try again. Maybe next week.

Softwares used for burning on DL should be at their latest version or becoming updated.
Have you tried to fixate the DL afterwards using ImgBurn or Nero??
Which imgburn version have you used?

I didn’t know you could do that :slight_smile:
It seems to do something, but I can’t see the difference as the disc was picked up by drive afterwards. I’m gonna test it in ny car later.

I wish lol. That’s a log from the image file that refuses to even start burning.
I tried a different one, and its acting funky at the end of the burn (few posts above).

I think I would try a SL burn of one of these mids and see if the drive is OK, did it come
with that firmware? Or did you flash?
