I got a used SH-S222A today, which is supposed to be working.
I had an Optiarc AD-7191A installed before. Removed that from the system and replaced it with the Samsung. Then tried to burn a DVD+R and it failed, hanging while trying to write the lead-out. Tried another one. Failed again at the same point. Tried a DVD-R. Yet again: Failed. Couldn't even write the lead-in this time. Then tried a blank CD-RW and it burnt just fine. Then a blank DVD-RW and again it burnt the disc just fine without a problem. I had data verification enabled both times and the discs were 100% OK.
At this point I setup an experimental Linux Mint install with K3B, to insure that it wasn't my old, bogged up, Vista install that was causing the problems. AND, I removed the extra DVD-ROM and set the Samsung to be Master on the IDE channel.
Well, I had hoped for it to cure the problem, but it still persists. Sometimes in fails deleting a DVD-RW for example. Then I try again a minute later and it does it without any hiccup.
What would you suggest?
I am kind of lost now. My only additional guess would be that the drive could be suffering from too much dust or something like that, inside. Perhaps some thorough cleaning would help. I mean dissambling the drive completely, and putting it back together after cleaning it. I don't have a problem with that. Neither do I have a problem with warranty, as I bought it used and have no receipt/invoice. So no warranty for me anyway.
Thank you very much in advance!
