SH-S203B seems slow

[qanda]This thread is about the Samsung SH-S203B / TS-H653B. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I have recently built a new system and installed an SH-203B burner based on reviews. I have it set so that the firmware upgrades itself automatically. I use Memorex DVD+R media, which always burned a movie in a previous system in about 6-7 minutes, as I recall (I may need to piece that unit back together and time it).

Anyway, in this new system, the fastest burning that I obtain with ImageBurn is about 2.4X, even though I changed from Automatic to 6X for the setting. The DVD is rated at 16X burn.

Are there some settings I can tweak to increase the burn speed?

Thanks
Ken K

Hi,
I have recently built a new system and installed an SH-203B burner based on reviews. I have it set so that the firmware upgrades itself automatically.
I don’t like these firmware auto updaters. If something goes wrong, your drive is dead. So I suggest to uninstall that software and download newer firmwares manually. If you like, you can subscribe to the “firmware announcement” thread to get a notification if newer firmware is available.

Some people call these Memowrecks.
Please post the MID (the corresponding part of the Imgburn log should suffice)

There is something really wrong. Lowest speed for DVD+R is 4x (at least this is what can be taken from the firmware).
Please provide information about the Sata controller you are using and its configuration (IDE/ATA;AHCI;Raid;whatever).

The DVD is rated at 16X burn.
That’s just what the manufacturer prints on the box

Are you ready to sacrifice a disc?
Run Nero CD/DVD Speed and have it create a disc. Start with the maximum speed that is offered. Post the screenshot here.

Not often but it has happened.

There is something really wrong. Lowest speed for DVD+R is 4x (at least this is what can be taken from the firmware).
Please provide information about the Sata controller you are using and its configuration (IDE/ATA;AHCI;Raid;whatever).

I am using the SATA controller on my Intel mb DP35DP. Two onboard serial controllers. The Samsung is attached to the first, ICH9 4 port SATA storage controller 2920. (operating system Windows XP Pro, SP3) They are not configured as RAID or AHCI. Note that there has been no change to the configuration of the system in the past few months and initially it would burn at 8X or a little more.

Are you ready to sacrifice a disc?
Run Nero CD/DVD Speed and have it create a disc. Start with the maximum speed that is offered. Post the screenshot here.
Michael

Here is the log. It is pretty lengthy. Despite the fact that it said it was copying at 18X, it took 24 minutes.

Thanks for taking the time to help with this.

Well, I changed the settings but they did not help (max write was 2.4X). Here is copy of the log after the settings were changed to “DMA if available” in all three primary and secondary channels…

Thoughts?

Only two things i can say that might make some sence, first to defrag your HDD, and the sedond is to try some other sata port, i had this almost the same problem with my 203D, always the buffers was 0-90% and never reached the selected speed, but after a few experiments everything now works fine  no dropping buffer and also no slowdowns in burn speed.
what are the current transfer modes? Just setting “DMA if available” is not sufficient.
Well, I have been making some progress. But first, where do I check the transfer modes?

Last night I re-read an earlier post that you had recommended and ran a .vbs file named resetmydma.vbs. With that I was able to get to a max write speed of 13.6 with an average of 9.6. The buffer and the device buffer ran about 100% max.

That speed is fine with me but if there are other tweaks I can do to get the speed even higher, I am all ears to hear what they are. Many thanks, by the way, for all of this help. It is awesome!

13,6x for a 3GB source file is perfectly ok, the drive will reach the maximum speed at the end of a full disc. I personally would not go faster than 12x max with that media btw.

OK, here are the transfer modes:

First, there are 3 primary and 3 secondary.

Transfer modes:
Primary IDE channels
First primary Device 0 not applicable
Device 1 not applicable

Second primary Device 0 ultra DMA 5
Device 1 ultra DMA 5

Third primary Device 0 n/a
Device 1 n/a

Secondary IDE channels

First secondary Device 0 n/a
Device 1 n/a

Second secondary Device 0 uDMA 5
Device 1 n/a

Third secondary Device 0 n/a
Device 1 n/a

(This raises the question of how does this info help? Can I use this to help me figure out what piece of equipment is on which SATA controller? If so, how?)

Thanks

Which media can be written reliably faster? What do you use?

Verbatim and TY is the choice that most of CDF would say, i also think that there is no point on going faster that 12x/16x, unless you want to do some testing.

Hi,
First, there are 3 primary and 3 secondary.

Transfer modes:
(…)
Second primary Device 0 ultra DMA 5
Device 1 ultra DMA 5
(…)
Second secondary Device 0 uDMA 5
Device 1 n/a
nothing to complain about here.

(This raises the question of how does this info help? Can I use this to help me figure out what piece of equipment is on which SATA controller? If so, how?)
This helps confirming if the drives are really running in DMA mode. Many people think, they enable “DMA if available” and are set.
From the information given in this post, it is not possible to tell what drive is hooked on which connector.

Additional information is often given by the properties of the drive as shown in device manager.
