Hey, hope you can help me out -- I'm looking for a drive to record DVDs.
Without further ado, here's what I'm looking for more specifically:
* I want DVDs to be recorded right the first time (most of the time), and stay readable as long as possible.
I do a lot of data backups, so I want DVDs to have a long and secure shelf life.
Occasionally I do restores, so I want to be able to read what I wrote without problems. Mostly I will read DVDs on the same drive I've recorded them. (I may read them in other drives also, but that will be rare, if at all.)
I tape a lot of videos and I will record movies onto the DVDs either as digital files or in DVD movie format.
Recording speed doesn't matter. It matters to a point of course, but quality and longetivity of data is the main MAIN thing in this whole post that I am looking for. By quality I mean being able to write and read with least problems.
I am not interested in RW feature. I do not use the rewrite feature with CDs now, and I don't think I will in the near future. I don't think this will change with DVDs. (I still have those 4 or so unused CD-RWs from about 2 years ago.)
I don't want to mess with firmware much. If I have to, I'll do it, like update the firmware once in a while, but I'd rather avoid it, unless it's necessary.
Price doesn't matter. To a point again. Anything under $200 is okay. If what I'm looking for is higher in price, I may go higher.
It was said somewhere: "good, cheap, fast" pick 2 (as in, can't find all 3 in one place). I'll go further than that, I'll pick 1 (one) !
I choose GOOD. [okay, maybe fast too ]
So, I've looked at a few drives:
Panasonic drive (don't remember model#) (someone said the trays are flimsy, I'd rather have a stable tray)
Pioneer DVR-107 (2 opinions: "a few steps back","fast, but needs firmware updates")
Plextor PX-712A (3 different opinions: "Okay", "too picky and expensive","expensive but good and deserves it" )
NEC ND-2500a ("good quality, low cost")
I have a recordable Plextor CD drive, which works just fine for me, so originally I was thinking of getting Plextor.
However, someone said to look into Pioneer and NEC.
I did, and it looks like NEC has better write quality, while Pioneer had some trouble reading some CDs/DVD.
So my thoughts so far is that I may get NEC ND-2500a.
However, I am interested in your thoughts. Does this drive match what I'm looking for, or should I look at a few more drives ? If so, which ones ?
