Selecting a budget but good burner

Hey all, I’ve got a price list here but I don’t know which external burner’s good. Can you guys just take a quick gander at it and see which is value for money? I’m not rich, so I’d prefer one that works well out of the box, doesn’t spoil fast, yet is affordable. My budget’s around $100. Thanks!

It’s on Page 2

I’d either vote for LG GE20NU or the Sony DRX840

Thanks. I’m doing some research on the GE20NU but can’t really find much information on it. Is there any particular reason why the price difference between this and the rest of the drives is so huge? I don’t really care much for additional features, as long as the thing doesn’t break down easily, can withstand the occasional knock every now and then, and can do the basic functions

-edit-

Are they more expensive because they’re slim? What’s the difference between slim and non slim?

The GE20NU are the external versions of GH20N series. I guess you can find some more information on these

Another option would be to buy an internal drive and an enclosure separately, then join them yourself

Slim drives are more expensive than the half-height (HH). But they often violate USB specs, are not as solid as the HH, and firmware update support is close to nonexistent.

Ah thanks a lot. I am unable to find any internal drive enclosures, but I have a Vantec enclosure that I used with my internal HDD. It states on the box that it works with 3.5" HDD, but does not mention disc drives. So, can I assume it won’t work?

bump, question still dangling :stuck_out_tongue:

There is a great chance that it wont work with optical drives.

@ ultradm,

If you are trying to locate an External Enclosure to install a quality half-height (HH) internal DVD Burner Optical Drive suggest visiting the CDFreaks External Enclosures Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f143) for External Enclosure information.

Suggest being careful in selecting an External Enclosure because there are External Enclosures specifically designed for Hard Drives and these types of External Enclosure will not work with Optical Drives.

I’ve been very happy with this one, although when I bought it the price was $10.00 less than it is now.

The drive internally is an iHAS422 and the review of this drive can be found here:

While building your own external drive is certainly possible, it often ends up costing more than buying a factory made external drive. Also, you can feel pretty confident that the factory made external drive & enclosure will work together. If they don’t, then the manufacturer will be responsible to fix it or replace it.
